According to reporting from Antara News, Indonesia’s Health Ministry is looking to increase the number of students in its hospital-based specialist doctor education program by expanding the network of participating hospitals.
Arianti Anaya, the ministry’s Director General of Health Human Resources, stated on Monday that approximately 3,000 hospitals, including private ones, have expressed interest in joining the network.
“With the expansion of the network coordinated by six designated education hospitals, we can increase the student quota,” she said.
The six hospitals are Harapan Kita Cardiovascular Hospital, National Brain Center Hospital, Soeharso Orthopedic Hospital, Harapan Kita Women and Children Hospital, Cicendo Eye Hospital, and Dharmais Cancer Hospital, says Antara News.
Anaya noted that on Monday (12/8/24,) three private hospitals, including the Jakarta Eye Center, submitted requests to join, adding that the initial registration accepts around 52 students across six specialties, such as cardiovascular diseases, pediatrics, neurology, and optometry. The ministry plans to add another 52 students in the next semester, bringing the total to 104.
Anaya said that the ministry is collaborating with the Indonesia Endowment Fund for Education (LPDP) to provide financial assistance to students, ranging from IDR 5 million to IDR 10 million, based on their level; junior, intermediate, or senior.
For example, intermediate students will receive IDR 7.5 million, while senior students will get IDR 10 million. LPDP will contribute IDR 5 million, and the remaining amount will be provided by one of the six hospitals.
Antara News reports that the ministry recently announced the opening of registration for the program from August 12 to September 8 to address the shortage of specialist doctors in certain regions.
This program is part of the health transformation agenda, focused on improving the referral system and human resources. It complements university-based education, aiming to create equal opportunities and contribute to a healthier Indonesia, says Antara News.
