According to reporting from Tempo, Indonesia’s Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOE), Erick Thohir, called on China-based social media giant TikTok to soon increase its investment in the country, highlighting Indonesia’s position as Southeast Asia’s largest economy.
“I hope TikTok won’t be a stranger to Indonesia. TikTok must dare to invest here more than other countries,” he said after attending the launch of “TikTok I Pos Aja! Creator House” in Kota Tua, Jakarta, on Wednesday (10/7/24.)
Thohir said that he had met with all of TikTok’s top brass and believed the platform should not keep its distance from Indonesia, reports Tempo. “Indonesia’s economic potential is much greater than the others. So, if the others get a single point of investment, Indonesia deserves at least four,” he said.
He further emphasized the country’s burgeoning digital economy, which is projected to reach IDR 4,500 trillion by 2030. While not currently the region’s top economy, Indonesia is expected to be among the top 15 by 2029 and within the top five by 2045, says Tempo.
“Our goal is to build mutually beneficial growth. I appreciate TikTok’s support for MSMEs and content creators. Don’t be a stranger to Indonesia,” he added.
During the event, the minister also highlighted state-owned post office PT Pos Indonesia’s efforts to revitalize historic buildings and attract public interest, ultimately boosting profitability. “I urge all SOEs to actively seek partnerships with MSMEs, the private sector, and foreign investors in a transparent and professional manner,” he said.
The minister further stressed the need for PT Pos Indonesia to adapt to the digital era by integrating its services with the logistics business. “PT Pos Indonesia shouldn’t become a ‘forgotten dinosaur’, but instead become a leading aggregator in Indonesia’s e-commerce supply chain.”
