According to the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy website, Indonesia is currently developing green destinations that fulfill sustainable aspects in line with Tourism Law (Undang-undang Nomor 10 Tahun 2009 tentang Kepariwisataan,) which explains that tourist destinations are responsible for protecting religious values, culture that lives in society, environmental sustainability and quality, and national interests.
Among Indonesia’s many beautiful islands, Pulau Nirup in Belakang Padang District, Batam City, in the province of Riau has been chosen as the prototype or model for a sustainable green tourist destination.
Thanks to its location directly opposite Singapore, and only about 13-kilometres from Sentosa Beach, there is high hope that the island will succeed in becoming a world-green tourist destination, providing a new experience for tourists visiting and staying there.
The Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy, Sandiaga Uno, said Pulau Nirup has a great opportunity to become a leading green tourist destination. This cannot be separated from the increasing trend of sustainable green tourism, which has successfully become the main attraction for local and foreign tourists.
Choosing Pulau Nirup as a sustainable green destination model in Indonesia stems from its ability to manage its ecosystem, which the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy says is evidenced by its ability to handle its water, including beautiful and well-maintained coral reefs; a big draw for tourists who like underwater activities.
Other supporting facilities complement Pulau Nirup’s readiness to welcome tourists, from immigration and customs facilities to a marina accommodating 180-yachts. These facilities facilitate and support the movement of foreign tourists visiting the island to experience a sustainable green destination.
Even more impressive is the prediction that Pulau Nirup will become an attraction similar to the Maldives, but in the style of Batam City. This is thanks to the long-term plan to build various luxury facilities in this green destination that borders Singapore, including luxury resorts.
The plan is to officially operate Pulau Nirup as a sustainable green destination in October 2024. The hope is that the development and progress to create premium destinations equipped with many supporting facilities will attract foreign tourists to visit the Riau Islands, especially Batam, which will create more jobs, and open up more possible business opportunities.
