One Million Chinese Tourist Arrivals Targeted for 2024

Speaking in Bali on Saturday (20/1/24,) Wisnu Sindhutrisno, Indonesia’s Regional I Director of Tourism Marketing said that the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy has set a target of one to one and a half million tourist arrivals from China in 2024, according to reporting from Antara News.

The tourist arrivals are expected to provide an equal distribution of tourism benefits in Indonesia.

“Last year, we targeted 361,000 Chinese tourists, and we achieved 707,000. This year, we increased the target to 1-million to 1.5 million,” he said.

Equal distribution is expected to be achieved because the ministry has seen a new pattern of travel among Chinese people in that around 65-percent are young people with longer tourism trip lengths who prefer activities related to adventure, nature, and culture.

Wisnu confirmed that in all promotional programs to China in 2024, community-driven tourism villages and homestays are included, reports Antara News, adding that efforts are being made to encourage Chinese tourists during the traditionally low seasons of February to March, and September to October.

According to Wisnu, the most potential is in direct flights to Indonesia from Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Beijing, followed by Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Currently, in terms of the number of foreign tourist arrivals in Indonesia, especially Bali, tourists from China are still ranked fourth, below those from Australia and India, says Antara News.

“We will improve the promotion, but beginning this year, the Chinese government seems to be starting to open up and be okay about making overseas trips,” he remarked.

Wisnu confirmed that his side had cooperated with several big players in the tourism industry in China to increase tourist arrivals as well as improve air transport connectivity, according to Antara News.
