Lion Air to Launch New Jakarta-Sorong Route

According to reporting from Tempo, Lion Air has announced the launch of its newest route from Jakarta to Sorong in Southwest Papua, which will start operating on February 7.

Corporate Communications Strategist of Lion Air Danang Mandala Prihantoro said the route will accommodate the needs of both tourists and businesspeople and will be kickstarted with a departure from Soekarno-Hatta International Airport at around 7:55 a.m. local time, with a return flight the same day, departing from Sorong at around 3:00 p.m. local time. “The new domestic route Jakarta to Sorong becomes a part of Lion Air’s non-stop route network in Indonesia,” he said.

The new route, he said, covers 2,158-miles with a travel time of around 4-hours. Connecting Jakarta and Sorong, this route aims to be a gateway to western Papua’s beauty, according to Tempo, who add that through Sorong, tourists may continue their journey to various other destinations, such as Manowatri, Fak-fak, Kaimana, Nabire, Manado, Jayapura, and Ambon, and others.

Meanwhile, Jakarta as the main hub connects passengers domestically and internationally to various cities in Indonesia such as Yogyakarta, Solo, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, Lombok, Kupang, Lampung, Palembang, Bengkulu, Jambi, Batam, Padang, Pekanbaru, Medan, Pontianak, Balikpapan, Palangkaraya, Banjarmasin, Singapore, and Kuala Lumpur.

Tempo reports that Lion Air will use a Boeing 737-800NG with 189 economy class seats and a Boeing 900ER with 215 economy-class seats.
