Volcanic Ash Cloud from Anak Krakatau Reaches 1,000-metres High

Lampung’s Mount Anak Krakatau in the Sunda Strait experienced another eruption and ejected volcanic ash as high as around 800-meters above the mountain peak or 957-meters above sea level on Thursday (14/12/23) at 10.10 WIB, according to reporting from Antara News.

According to information broadcast by the Center for Volcanology and Geological Disaster Mitigation (PVMBG), during the eruption recorded by seismograph, that it had a maximum amplitude of 52-mm and a duration of 20-seconds, the column of gray ash from Mount Anak Krakatau headed north.

PVMBG said that the volcano previously erupted at 05.37 WIB. The height of the eruption column was observed then to be approximately 1,000-meters above the peak or 1,157-meters above sea level, say Antara News.

In the eruption recorded by seismograph with a maximum amplitude of 55-mm and a duration of 20-seconds, the ash column of Mount Anak Krakatau was observed to be gray in color with thick intensity and pointing north.

Head of the Mount Anak Krakatau Monitoring Post in Hargopancuran, Rajabasa District, South Lampung Regency, Lampung Province, Andi Suardi, said that the activity status of Mount Anak Krakatau is currently at Level III or Alert, according to Antara News.

PVMBG asked residents not to approach Mount Anak Krakatau or carry out activities in the area within a five-kilometer radius of the volcano’s active crater.
