Governor Asks Village Heads Deal With Waste

According to reporting from Antara News, the Governor of Bali, Wayan Koster, speaking at the inauguration of the 2023 to 2028 Bali workshop committee, has asked village heads to solve the waste problem by managing waste based on sources and limiting the generation of single-use plastic waste within two years.

Koster believes the village head should make good use of village funds and have an impact on the community, and one way is by implementing the vision of Nangun Sat Kerthi Loka Bali as contained in the governor’s regulation number 47/2019 concerning Source-Based Waste Management and Bali Governor Regulation Number 97 of 2018 concerning Limitations on Single-Use Plastic Waste Generation.

“I want to be like in Punggul, Badung Regency, to be able to solve the waste problem in their village, sort organic and inorganic waste, process it into fertilizer and distribute it to farmers, then process the inorganic into handicrafts,” he said.

In front of dozens of village workers throughout Bali, Koster expressed his confusion, because only 18-villages had implemented source-based waste management through the creation of a Reduce, Reuse, Recycle (TPS3R) Waste Management Site, even though the Bali Provincial Government made sure to grant land if the village asked for the construction of TPS3R, say Antara News.

Koster admits that he will be even more proud of innovative villages trying to find funding sources to deal with waste.

“If all villages are like that with their traditional villages then Bali is clean, if it is clean then the image of tourism will increase, there will be no more stories of trash crammed in one viral place especially in Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar places which are tourist destinations, this garbage problem should be finished, he said.

On that occasion Koster asked for the commitment of the village workers, furthermore if this commitment was not carried out the Governor of Bali would not hesitate to convey to the Minister of Village PDTT not to spend village funds.

“I ask for his commitment, if this isn’t implemented frankly I will talk to the Village Minister, there is no need to spend the village funds. So what is it for if it is not used effectively to answer problems in the village, rather than not having an unproductive impact,” he said.
