Environmental Pollution Tax to be Introduced

According to an article published by Bisnis.Com, President Jokowi is said to be ready to introduce an environmental pollution tax following the recent bad press Jakarta has been receiving for deteriorating air conditions.

The initiative was acknowledged by the Minister of Environment and Forestry, Siti Nurbaya Bakar after attending a limited meeting with the president regarding improving air quality for Greater Jakarta, at the State Palace, Monday (14/8/2023) who said the government would regulate vehicle emission quality standards by tightening the emission test process so that if a vehicle does not meet the emission test criteria, fines will be imposed on motorists, report Bisnis.Com.

“The technique for imposing an environmental pollution tax has now been carried out by BRIN and the Ministry of Environment and Forestry has finalized the formula. It’s just that it really needs to be socialized on a public test because it depends on taxes because the numbers are pretty decent,” she said at the presidential office.

Apparently, the regulation on environmental pollution taxes was included in Article 206 of Government Regulation No. 22 concerning Government Regulation (PP) Number 22 of 2021 regarding the Implementation of Environmental Protection and Management.

Furthermore, Siti said that in the near future she would cooperate with the DKI Jakarta Provincial Government (Pemprov) to carry out emission test raids in encouraging compliance with motorized vehicle emission tests as a pilot area. If the policy is successful, it will be continued in other areas.

In addition, the central government together with the regions will also make it mandatory to apply emission tests for all motorized vehicles entering ministry/ agency and local government office facilities, report Bisnis.Com.

“We will also include requirements for passing the emission test for vehicle registration renewal and payment of vehicle tax. What’s more, in fact, PP 22 of 2021 already has steps in Article 206 on the implementation of environmental protection and it has been considered and technically prepared for the imposition of an environmental pollution tax,” concluded Siti.
