My house is in Banjar Taman, in a little rural pocket not far from the end of Sunset Road where the highway was gong to continue on from there.
There used to be large pockets of land around me that were not to be built upon as they were set aside for the continuation of the highway. There is a rice field directly below my window but that was never for highway and it has prime villas on 3 borders and single carriage way along one end of it.
The highway allocated tracts were not cultivated, just had grass and some cows on them for quite a few years
Over the last 12 months though, about half has been built upon and new areas are being filled with white stone in preparation for building. Bribes here and there had new places getting their permits all over the highway allocated tracts.
New villas (and Aston complex and others) are just beginning construction on those tracts, all within the view from my top balcony .
The latest "rumour" (coming from the traditional Bali landowners here) is that the highway will not go through as they have allowed too much building to go ahead on the land that was to be used and it would cost them a fortune to buy out the householders and demolish the properties.
Basically from where I'm sitting (literally not figuratively) and looking out the window, the empty space/land that was sitting waiting for the highway to continue on directly.... is just lovely big new expensive villas and more in preparation to be built... no where for a road, let alone a 4 lane highway to go
The whole area is desperate for a continuation of Sunset but I cant for the life of me see where they're going to put it
Maybe if they demolish the Gaol?![]()
Most of the developers in the Tanah Lot, Tabanan area and beyond have been using the Sunset highway as a selling point. It will be sad if this project doesn't go through. But then again...a few new villas and other encroachments will not keep the Govt from taking the road through the living rooms of these fancy abodes....if and when they do decide to wake up. I have seen this happen in the past in Java ...Nothing should come in the way of Development...as the saying goes.....
YEah ... me too if anyone hears anything on the highway past Tanah Lot would appreciat a heads up ... the Gilimanuk road is a death trap!
May be no Western infrastructure but Hardys in Tabanan is OK for shopping and now good organic farms and even a German baker up toward Pupuan. Nice surf cafe at Balion, good thai restaurant at Gajah Meena and 2 or 3 small hotels up Pupuan way. As for building materials - most basic stuff available in Tabanan. Very up and coming area methinks and land 5% of Seminyak prices.
I saw propably 3 years ago by chance in a government office the drawing of the sunset highway (the name was different though on the paper), itīs long ago but there you had two lanes in each direction from gilimanuk until soka (little bit north of the existing "road"), there divided in 1. the existing street to tabanan - denpasar (1 lane each as it is), 2. a new street (1 lane each) over selemadeg, kerambitan, belalang to the old street to tanah lot...over canggu, kerobokan to the south.
That would be possible without doubt but is this also a good solution? Until soka yes, but the rest just 1 lane each? no
But the west is great but strangely always underrated I donīt know why itīs still clean and cheap fantastic landscape...so I really hope for a pimped highway (less people got killed everyday too), there are really no investors for a toll road? Hard to believe....
Tabanan is a great place also for investment. I am original from that area. The price is higher about 2 years. Now, only few beach front land at my village. Some Dutch expat living around. Now the development is increase since Alila Villa Soori at Kelating beach, I heard like Bulgari also interested to expand at Tabanan. About Highway? I do not heard when it is started, but people already make sign for the road.
