I've just come back from a trip to Bali (my 3rd in all), and this time was really taken with Ubud and the surrounding area. From what I've seen on this Forum, people seem to think Ubud is definitely the place to be. I would like to acquire some property in that area, partly as investment and partly as a place for holidays.
I'm hoping to buy an existing villa within about 15 minutes or so of Ubud, ideally with river/valley view (or maybe rice-terrace/mountan view), alternatively to buy land in that sort of location and build myself. I guess the latter alternative would be a lot cheaper, but much more time-consuming and full of frustrations. My budget can go pretty high for the right sort of place.
Anyone have any suggestions as to where to start? I've looked at the main Bali property websites, but they largely seem to concentrate on the coastal areas, rather than Ubud. Are there any agencies which specialise in the Ubud/inland areas?
By the way, if anyone is interested in Japan, we have a similar sort of forum there - mainly for longish term expats:

Homes are custom built in ubud (or anyplace you want in bali)
They are made from ironwood no rotting or mold in this wood, the wall pannels all slide open like the japanese shojiscreens.
Any size you want aswell.

Foddy, check out the number of posts made by the most recent respondents to your inquiry, and use your head.
After seven years of continuous living in the Ubud area, I can say with a hearty YES that the Ubud area is great!
If you are serious about property here, then you need to come back, for a forth time, and have a serious “look about.”
Your rose colored glasses and overt statement, “my budget can go pretty high for the right sort of place” is an open invitation to a party you really don’t want to host.
