Sensor/Security Lights

Postby toucan on Thu May 01, 2008 12:28 am

Can anyone please advise if outdoor light fittings with inbuilt movement sensors are available in Bali? I have only noticed the outdoor lights being on all night, but cannot recall ever seeing sensor lights coming on and off. I am after nice/decorative light fittings, not just the spotlight type. Any tips on a good lighting shop would be very much appreciated.

Hi,
You may know of Multi Daya in Denpasar and Ace Hardware should be worth a shot. I have purchased my light sensors at Multi Daya, and they work well, but couldn't be considered decorative.

“Ace is the place” and in our case, we were able to find what we needed there. As you already noted, out of compound lighting is normally all night long, and it is considered rude to not have such lighting in the front of your abode if you live in a village. It’s sort of a “banjar street light” idea, and a twenty watt bulb is plenty.

In the interior of our compound we have employed motion detector lighting, (and an alarm as well).

Considering what can, and does go on outside the walls of any Balinese compound during any hour of the night...dogs roaming in packs, villagers returning from temple, or pecalang on patrol, it’s pretty silly to have outside lighting based on movements there.

Thanks Roy, yes it is village area and have permanent dim lights out near the street, however we want sensor lights near the front door and other entrances, not only as a security feature but also very handy when coming home after dark and fumbling for keys. The road terminates with just 2 houses between us and the end, both are family, so no through traffic to speak of. Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.

In your case, as you describe, you might consider a timer switch as opposed to a motion detector switch. Motion detectors are more expensive, more “finicky” and in this climate, more prone to become ineffective by all the wonderful things that will very soon grow on them.

If the current lighting outside your entrance is too dim to see your keys, then you need a brighter light.

In any event, you can find both at Ace. Cheers!

We have motions sensor lights that I brought from UK. Just set the sensor a few feet off the ground so it is not set off by dogs, chickens etc.

However, once you get past the lights you have our three dogs to contend with

If you manage that, then there is Made with an air rifle

Well, life on Lombok is a bit different to Bali
