Default Info wanted about Lumbung (traditional ricehouse)

    Hi,

Iám looking for some more info about Lumbungs.
Lumbung are wooden traditional ricehouses from Lombok ( i think..)

Iám going for a trip this weekend to go to the Gili islands to see the different types of Lumbungs they are using there.

    My question is:

Does anybody knows the m2 meter price?
Are there builders you know who are building lumbungs?
Better to look in Lombok for some builders?
You know if there are Lumbungs in Bali as on the Gili's?

    Any information would be nice....

    Many thanks in advance guys

    Greetings,

    Hugo

Yes [if you are talking about the rice storage houses/barns on stilts that protect the rice from rats etc..], I've seen many in North Bali. Only the day before yesterday I was looking at some. One was well over a hundred years old and the owner wanted to sell, but it looked a little past it's 'sell by date' so I declined. I think they are wonderful structures with usually the rice plough slung underneath. I will try to get some photos soon and post if you are interested or if you are in the north at anytime I would be happy to show you the ones I know of.
Sorry no idea of the cost of reproducing one.
The same day I looked a a traditional original antique [around 150 years old] wooden building from Java being rebuilt here too, a truely beautiful heavily carved teak living structure aprox 18 x 20 metres. I will be photographing that in the next couple of weeks so again if you are interested pm me and I will send you a full set of pictures. I will probably post 1 or 2 when I have done it. I am thinking of buying one of these as the owner [a man who is knowlegeable and very fastidious about his buildings] quoted me a price [including ceramics and foundation platforms] so much cheaper than it would cost to build a villa of similar size. The advantages being if you move you can take the house with you and of course they are very earthquake resistant.

Hugo,I do not think there is a lot of ricefarming on the Gilis,if any,so methinks it is the wrong place to look for lumbungs. As Mat already said, there are plenty of them in Bali. Many of the places along the Bypass, between Simpang siur and Sesetan intersection and in the Padang Galak /Sanur area that build bales and wooden houses (or sell antiques)also have lumbungs. The lumbung is not so popular as a dwelling as the alang-alang roof starts to deteriorate quickly into a sort of powder, bubuk.Using another kind of roofing makes no sense, then you better choose another form of building. And unless you have an oversized model, the living space is rather cramped because of the shape of the roof.
If you go to the Gilis by Padang Bai you might drop in at Lumbung Jamuh homestay in Balina Beach, just before the Alila. That is about ten kilometers east of Padang Bai.
I hope it still exists, they had a homestay with several lumbungs. The phonenumber was 0363-41553,better check first.

I forgot to add, here in Bali Lumbung are mostly referred to as Glebeg by the locals.
The people who have Lumbung/Glebeg are usually perceived to be rich landowners.

Apart from Villa Ombak there are other bungalows on Gili Trawangan built in the Lumbung style. Dream Village and Good Heart for example.

Yes, I've stayed at 'good heart'. Nice little buildings, very comfortable.

have followed the link, and I must say I like the style of the house..
Now knowing how it looks/what u mean with Lumbung, I have seen this style in a non-finished beachfront resort a little north of Tulamben. Anyways, three years ago when viewing that resort, I asked the price of how much it would cost to build something like that, he answered (if I remember right) between USD 18K and 25K...
On that resort there were 5 of them... I can imagine if building 5 the per piece cost would be lower then when building 1.
Although dated info, I hope it's of any use.
    friendly greetings, gilbert.

    hi guys,

sorry for the delay, i checked the different types of lumbungs in Gili trawangan.
I can say there was a lot of choice of lumbungs.
Now i know the structure and what i want to build.
I had a quotation already for a lumbung size 8x5 for 110.000.000 rp.
I have to calculate myself if i let it build or i build it myself.
