coming today to see my house in bali

Postby kalam on Mon Aug 11, 2008 3:52 am

Hi guys!

My Dad recently passed away in Bali, and left me a house there, so I'm coming to check it out + deal with all the legal stuff (which seems rather daunting atm).
I'm trying to decide whetehr to sell it or keep it, it seems Bali is not so friendly anymore for foreigners living there, I've lived there before, in short bursts, but since 9-11 have things taken a turn towards antipathy?

 ???

not so friendly in what regard? politically, culturally, economically? i don't think many foreigners here would suggest they've experienced antipathy in bali, but i'd hate to speak on their behalf. your post is a little boggling to me - i'd understand the relevance of your question if this was an iraq expat forum, etc, but bali???

Without knowing the details of the legal stuff it is difficult to know where you are coming from but best advice is to get yourself a good lawyer. As for the rest well Bali is a dream for most of us and we do not have your fears.

Either way good luck

That's very true Jimbo.

Personally, I have a problem with this post...

“Hi guys! My Dad recently passed away in Bali, and left me a house there...”

No, what's happened is since 9-11 Americans who don't live outside the US have learned to live in fear. You are fed fear every day through your media. Get out of America and see the world through eyes other than your media. As to the legal side of your dad leaving you a house in Bali - that could be complicated. Was your dad Indonesian?

Bert, you ask “why?” Well, just read the post in a verbal context...

“Hey guys! My Dad recently passed away in Bali, and left me a house there...”

Oddly enough, not only does the OP lack any communication of remorse, (the dad having died), but so too all the following posts by others!

Here, on this forum, it seems that dead cats and dogs get more attention.

Just re-read the string. I would only hope that where I’m coming from with this tidbit of observation is understandable. If not, then fine.

Cheers, and a quick reminder that Galungan is next week. That’s the time for ancestors...not dogs, or cats.

all the while trying to ignore your efforts to make mountains out of mole hills

i didn't think any mountains were being raised from my original post to you:

Why that particular part of the post Roy?

actually, i was curious if it was his right to obtain land as a presumed 'non-indonesian' that you took issue with - that's why i asked why it was that particular piece of the post you cited..

poor kalam the writer of the post, funny how he hasn't replied back to so many peoples opinions of his questions. i don't blame him/her you've all posted very negative comments about the way its written and reading into it how you perceive it. who cares what you think the person has just lost their loved one and only seeks some advice. if you don't like the content of a line of text keep it to yourself and read something else. gees roy if you get so upset about how a person actually addresses the forum as in 'hi guys' then progresses to tell the story how do you suggest he does. how do you know the writer hasn't shown remorse maybe you should take up a career in mind reading.

Oh oh...I didn't expect to start such a slinging match...please ignore the 9-11 stuff, I'm used to thinking in a very wide global sense, and do think the whole world has changed since those infamous events. I can understand a degree of defensiveness with regard to your 'paradise' but Bali is no exception to the the changes.
My Dad was a Finnish-Australian, and had lived here for about 5 years, I don't feel I need to splurge emotionality over his death to strangers on an internet forum.

However, if anyone can offer me some supportive advice, I would be grateful...?
My Dad had a notary who was processing the land deal, my Dad owned the house (which he built a lot of himself).
Can I just use this notary to sort out the legal stuff?
Also, he had evidently signed to sell the house before he died, would this be a contract to a specific person?
I am a single woman, and am aware I'm very vulnerable here to totally losing the house he worked so hard to have, that would be very sad.
Best wishes to all of you.

Upset? Did I seem upset?

I made a comment and then answered a question. Good grief, you are upset, but I'm not.

Kalam, best wishes in finding a new owner for your dad's home here in Bali.

hi kalam
i suggest you contact your dads notary and read the contract this will tell you who the house goes to in case of his death. as to some pretty harsh comments about the wording of your predicament remember its just a forum and us being single women have to stick together and be strong in these hard times of a sometimes seemingly mans world.
and 'good grief' roy it takes me a little more than your comments to get me upset.
so good luck kalam
