I was asked yesterday to give some help to a relative with his English homework. So I sat down with him and prepared to go through his questions in his English text book. Big problem... I couldn't understand the printed questions or the English. The grammar was terrible, the spelling worse and previous answers marked as correct by a 'teacher' had nothing to do with the asked question. Something is seriously wrong here with the education system if they cant even get the text books right. Surely it cant be that difficult to get them proof read before they publish. Well worried about sending my kids to school here now and may affect my decision to stay here in the future.
You're not wrong there Mat, I'm not sure about Denpasar but the English text books up here in Buleleng are terrible. I help my wife's little brother out with his english homework sometimes and half of it doesn't make sense. When I finally do work out what they're on about it comes back marked as wrong anyway. I've even corrected the grammar in the text books and sent little bro to school to show his teachers all the mistakes they've made. Fat lot of good that did as it feel of deaf ears. I can't get over how messed up the education system is here.
What school does your relative go to by the way?
yeah...that was one of the reasons I gave up on teaching kids at the SMA in Sambangan
now my wife is going back to school in Pemaron, and again I am confronted with horrible english now from that school, even not sure if it would qualify as english
so I did like BKT did, I corrected it into proper english and helped my wife with the questions and answers...trust me, she should have gotten a score of 100 on it,
but came back with a 70 score
Me not having that went to the school to talk with the teacher, that helped...well helped...she got a 100 on the paper but I am now 'stuck' in teaching english to an English teacher.
who by the way graduated from Udayana University in....English.
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
