Baby stuff in Bali

Postby cempaka on Sun Jan 27, 2008 10:46 pm

We will be moving back to Bali, this time with our daughter who is five months old. I was just wondering what kind of baby products are available there nowadays that are not of the plastic or disposable variety (diapers, wipes etc.). I don't necessarily mind using the disposable versions, but I just wanted to know what my options are if anyone knows. Thanks.

Hi Cempaka

Well I use disposable nappys & wipes so I cant tell you about cloth ones, I have to say I havent actually seen any in the baby shops. Having said that I do find everything that I need here. You can get the full range of Johnsons and Cussons products as well as some other brands I dont know. Cots, pushchairs, etc are a fraction of the cost they are in UK (Not sure about USA) so it is probably as cheap for you to buy new here rather than shipping. Same goes for baby clothes $2/3 for a nice little cotton set.

With tiled floors throught the house we only used nappies when we went out.......I think I remember that but as I have never changed a nappy for my six children I may be wrong :-)

Yes you can find car seats, though as we dont have a car I haven't looked at them and am not sure what safety standards they meet.

I have a child three years old, the first four months we didn´t use anything, the balinese way, just put a piece of cloth under and I remember it was a very stressfull time, hehehe not washing machine, not pembantu, washing by hand and the garden full of clothes everywhere, not enought trees!!!!!!!! the good thing it was that the next day everything it was dry, not talking about ironing............after that I didn´t want to use the disposible nappys so I tried to put pieces of clothes under the underwear, although I have to say that the cloth dipers here are not the same I used to see in my own country (spain), I tried to use the less possible the disposible nappys but finally after a while I giving up and use them!!!!!!!
I had to go once with my child to the hospital in Singapore and I was surprise about how many things there are there, at the shops at Children Hospital (KK Hospital), hehehe just in case you are doing any stopover!!!
About the car seats, I know some friends who bought it in Glandys, one of the most popular places to buy things for children in Denpasar although like Mimpi said I have not idea about quality and variety. We always have been around on the motorbike with the carriers bags (sorry I don´t remember now the proper spelling), I remember I was so surprise because that time I spent a lot money buying the baby Borg and the Ergo carriers in Spain and here in Denpasar you can find these kind the carriers in so many diferent places and very very cheap, of course the quality is not the same but finally the funtion is the same..........I guess you know these things, I really recomend you these carriers expecially if you like walking around the rice fields or on the beach!!!!!!!!!! so many beautiful places in bali to enjoy with your baby in your arms and close to you!!!!

I know it is supposedly eco freindly to use the cloth nappies however, they do not wick the moisture away from babies bum and then of course if you are using a washing machine to clean them (not you Begonia but in general) which is worse, the energy you use to clean all those nappies or the disposable ones?

I made my choice and it may not be the right one for everyone but I have to say baby has not had nappy rash even once in 18 months. So it as the right choice for him.

As for going without, yes we have ceramic floors but there are the sofas and the bed to think about too. And again the question of baby laying asleep on a damp cloth etc, not to mind us as we co sleep :o)

One thng I was looking for here and couldnt find anywhere was a stair gate. But we seem to be doing fine without it touch wood!

Sorry Cempaka I couldn´t find any cloth diapers in Bali, I hope Ilu can tell you where she bought all the cloth dipers because what we were using it was the pieces of cloths they use to put the babies on the bed, not really proper diapers just cloths, usually balinese don´t use anything and now if they use something are the disposable diapers. I was lucky because some friends from Australia brought for us a lot non disposable diapers, 100% cottom, I had probably 10 of them and with this weather it was easy to use them, and I brought as well some cloth diapers from Spain, although finally I was combine both options.
I guess in your country there is as well a lot variety of non disposable. Being honest here there is not many options, although as I told you I hope Ilu can help you.

I have to say I agree with her, it took a month and three doctors and about 5 million to diagnose my son with whooping cough and treat it.
