Default The colors of sunset surfing....

The fun part of my 'job' allows me to get out into the Ocean and witness the beauty from that perspective. Here's another rendition of the photographic HDR process with a local surfer at sunset as the subject....

Fantastic! - makes me wonder where you and the camera are, and how you keep the lens clear.

    Hey Ron,
I've got a fisheye lens on the camera for this shot so I'm in front of this guy by about 1.5m. I swim out and wear protective headgear to avoid injury from surfboards etc. I'll spend two or three hours in the water depending on currents, workload due to the size of waves and weather conditions. With a 32Gb card in the cam I'm good to go for 1000+ shots if needed.

A trick for the camera lens, potatoes! For some reason the starch in the juices creates a small film on the camera lens long enough and clear enough for the camera to operate as normal. It does break apart after about 45 seconds but once ducked and elevated again that time frame is reset.

    Cheers,
    Mark.

Thanks Mark. I enjoy potatoes cooked many different ways - but did not know of this ability to make a useful lens coating. Interesting.

I'm just wondering how this was found out? Maybe a rush to get the job done a surf photographer scoffed down a plate of chips/french fries and hit the ocean. The resulting effect from the traditional spit on the lens technique must have been a real eye opener.

    Cheers,
    Mark.

Looks fantastic. I would love to know how to do this. You might be interested in this site if you haven't seen it already:

Ah yes, I forgot, this was taken at the main Serangen island reef break.

    Default potato

When I was a younger diving lad we'd use raw spuds on the inside of the mask so they wouldn't fog.

Weird that people just now use spit and no spuds for diving. Never heard of this trick before taking to the waves for surf photography.
