    Default Telkom Speedy Now Cheaper

Of course, very rarely does any Indonesian organisation tell you these things up-front.

I was pleasantly surprised last month to find that my telephone bill was lower than usual. Upon closer investigation, I noticed that my usual monthly fee for TelkomSpeedy had dropped from Rp 300,000 to Rp 200,000. I thought there must be a mistake.

TelkomSpeedy now charges Rp 75,000 to activate. The monthly fee is now Rp 200,000. They've increased the monthly flow limit to 1 GB (previously 750MB). The price for going over "the limit" has been reduced as well (Rp5/KB). Miracles do happen.

It's still nothing to get overly-excited about. But it's a step in the right direction. All their other "plans" have been discounted as well.

    Phil,

Is that only available in Denpasar, or can you get it in Singaraja as well?

Yes, as far as I know, Telkom Speedy is only available in the South.

About a year ago, I had some friends in Candi Dasa who were "interested". They contacted Telkom then and were told something like if enough people expressed interest, they'd look into it. I'm not sure of all the technicalities involved, but as far as I know, ADSL connections have to be physically and relatively close to a "server". (Less than 5 kms.) Unless I'm wrong, I think the nearest Telkom hub-thing is in Denpasar.

The following comments are for those of us who've been having problems with Telkom Speedy the last few days:

One of their servers, (I presume in Jakarta), spat the dummy. Initially, I spent several hours checking my computer/modem and couldn't find anything wrong. (I didn't know about the server problem.)

Numerous phone calls to their "Help Desk(s)" gave me assorted suggestions (all of them completely useless). One woman told me I should wait and be patient, for another three days, or so. Until I realised that she thought I wanted a new account. Another one told me the first thing I should check is if my telephone is working. (I told her that I was talking to her with my telephone.) A few others told me that they would get their technicians on it to "re-enable" my account - wait 10 minutes, and try again. Of course, they promised to ring me back - I'm still waiting. Hours later, no solution.

The last one I contacted thought there might be a problem with my actual modem. So, what do you reckon I should do, Dewi? Call the person who sold you your modem, was her answer. Will that cost me for a service call? She thought yes, probably. And then asked me to be patient. The part that really got me was when she asked me how happy I am with Telkom Speedy's "help service". So I told her:

It's basically bull-shit. The blind leading the blind. She responded with something like: "I'm sorry for your uncomfortable, and please be patient". Would I agree to a "technician" visiting my house tomorrow? Sure, but why not right now? Somebody might come tomorrow, or the next day...

Feeling rather pissed-off with all the non-information I'd received, I did ring the guy who sold me my modem in the first place. (A free-lance guy who does work for Telkom sometimes.)

It took us about three minutes to "fix" the problem. Everything's fine now. What bugs me about all of this is why the Telkom people couldn't (or won't) give me the real information/solution in the first place?

So - if anybody in southern Bali is still having a problem with their Telkom Speedy connection, maybe I can help. Forget about "technicians", and all the rest. I just might be your guy (free, of course). Send me a PM from this site.

    What was the problem?

Something, someone, screwed up my ADSL's modem settings. Not being able to get into any of my web-browsers, I just assumed that was it. (I couldn't understand why all my ping tests came up OK but still couldn't get to a browser.) Not so.

I had to type in the address of my default gateway to get into the on-line set-up for my modem and connection. Basically, my user-name/password weren't there. Punched them in and problem solved.

Like I said before...why the "help-desks" couldn't tell me that in the first place remains a mystery to me. I might have my "revenge" tomorrow...a "technician" is coming. Guess I'll just have to tell him/her I've sorted it out. And tell them to bugger-off, because their technical service is about as useful as an ashtray on a motorbike. I might give them a beer, if they turn up.

Only God knows why companies like this employ people who know virtually nothing about computers...on their front line. Beats me.

The service provider is normally responsible for the service up to the boundary of your property. The wiring and equipment inside your property is owned by you or the landlord. AFAIK the service provider is capable of interrogating and/or loading new firmware into your modem and checking the "network level" performance but not your username and password.

It could be that the service appeared to them to be operating correctly. In any case it's always a good idea to be familiar with the settings in the modem. It's also a good idea to screen dump them including the firmware level which should appear in the settings somewhere.

    Hi Allan

    Thanks for your post.

I've already fixed the problem...everything is sweet again.

The Telkom "technicians" didn't arrive today. A pity, because I wanted to tell them to rack-off, since I found the solution by myself. Then again, they might turn up tomorrow, the next day, next month, or probably never. No freebies of any kind if or when they do.
