Can anyone recommend a good but cheap Android based mobile?
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.
Cannot recommend any, but there is a blog at Android Indonesia which may be useful. It does not give much info about carrier support. But I did find the pointer to Tekomsel's Appzone site at Telkomsel Appzone which offer applications for iPhones, Balckberries and Android. For example you can search for the Samsung Galaxy and find a few. So this suggests that they can work with some Android phones.
Thanks for that. There is also a pretty active forum for Android, all in Indonesian. The LG Optimus One (P500) looks like a reasonable option.

That particular LG phone is not available yet in Indonesia. I went for the Samsung Galaxy 5 and was just under 2 million rp. It's a compact phone, but with all of the regular smart phone features. WIFI, GPS, Bluetooth etc.

This phone gets good reviews. Discussions in the US often say - first choose which carrier you want to use, then pick the phone - because you apparently cannot just buy any phone then use it with any carrier. So I will be interested to hear how easy it is to work with your Indonesian phone network.
