An American expatriate living in Lombok for 15 years apparently reached the end of his rope on Aug. 22, when police say he barged into a late-night prayer session with his shoes on, unplugged a microphone and may have even hit one of the worshippers.

Police and witnesses said he was lucky to escape with his life as enraged worshippers chased him, then ransacked his house.

Luke Gregory Lloyd, 64, escaped a beating but is being held by police on suspicion of blasphemy and violating his visa, the deputy chief of the Central Lombok Police, Comr. Lalu Mahsun, said on Monday.

“This man really angered residents of Kuta village in Pujut, Central Lombok,” Mahsun said.

“On the night of August 22 he stormed into a musholla [prayer facility] and berated locals who were performing the Tadarus,” the traditional reading of the Koran that goes late into the night following special 9 p.m. Ramadan prayers.

“He entered with his shoes on and then unplugged the microphone used by locals to recite the Koran,” Mahsun said. “We believe he even hit one of the worshippers because, according to him, they had interrupted his sleep.”

Mahsun said the local religious affairs office would need to decide whether Lloyd had committed blasphemy, which is illegal. If officially named a blasphemy suspect, he will face further questioning.

Meanwhile, police are holding Lloyd under guard at a local hotel while they also confer with immigration officials. Mahsun said Lloyd’s visa expired in April 2006. They declined to say why he was being held at a hotel instead of a police holding cell.

Lloyd has a history of disrupting local prayer services, Mahsun said, but this was his most extreme act.

Nasruddin, a resident of Kuta village, said he had lost patience after Lloyd’s latest outburst, which he said had been deeply insulting to residents.

Worshippers chased after Lloyd, Nasruddin said, but police intervened and took the American into custody before he was injured. Nasruddin said the villagers decided to ransack Lloyd’s house instead.

They broke windows, destroyed furniture and demolished a wall.

Two children have died of rabies in Bali, bringing the official death toll from the epidemic that broke out on the island in November 2008 to 78.

The latest victims were identified as Made Pin Anggrayana Putra, 13, and Kadek Suparsa Yasa, 5, both from Buleleng district. Anggrayana died on Saturday, and Suparsa died on Sunday.

Ken Wirasandi, the secretary of the rabies task force at Denpasar’s Sanglah General Hospital, said on Tuesday that the victims had exhibited clear symptoms of rabies, such as acute fear of light and water, shortness of breath and foaming at the mouth.

While the official death toll is now 78, unofficial estimates put the figure at 85, which includes seven victims who died showing symptoms of rabies but were never autopsied.

The number of dog-bite incidents across the island is also on the rise. On Monday, a dog in Karangasem district bit five people, including a veterinarian called in to treat it.

Two of the victims were treated at Sanglah Hospital but none received a rabies vaccine because the hospital has run out of stock.

And in Tabanan district, 17 people were bitten by dogs.

Rabies vaccines are running low across the resort island, with the districts of Denpasar, Badung, Klungkung, Karangasem and Bungli confirmed to be out of stock.

Careless disposal of plastic waste creates environmental pollution because plastic degrades very slowly.

To tackle this problem the Balinese community held an event called "Free of Plastic Waste” last Friday.

Supported by the Coca-Cola Company, the community cleaned up the Nusadua Beach area in Bali.

The general manager of Coca-Cola in the region addresses the issue.

[Sani Dwi Prasetya, General Manager, Coca-Cola, Balinusa]:
"Bali is ours, Bali belongs to the world and our children so let's keep this island free of garbage, not just for ourselves but for all those to come in the future."

Local communities at every beach in Bali also took part in the cleanup.

Organic and inorganic garbage is collected separately, with plastic waste being taken away for recycling.

It’s an effort that’s popular with the locals.

Made Wirata, Member, Bali Off-Road Club:

"Everyone should be concerned about the environment, put a stop to littering and choose between organic and inorganic waste for recycling."

Plastic bottles can take up to 1,000 years to naturally degrade.

Just came across this article in the JP about the government considering plans to redenominate the rupiah:

The central bank is deliberating a potential Rupiah denomination in light of decreasing exchange rate valuations against the US dollar in recent years.

Bank Indonesia is considering the possibility of eliminating zero digits in the currency’s nominal value, as reported by kompas.com.

“The central bank is preparing several measures to make Rp 1 feasible,” new Bank Indonesia Governor Darmin Nasution said over the weekend.

The bank has not yet decided how many zero digits would be eliminated, but plans to consult with the House of Representatives before reaching a decision, Darmin said.

“We will publicize the plan by the end of this year,” Darmin said, adding that currency redenomination processes generally take four to five years.

The redenomination plans will consider overall economic health, low inflation and price stability, Bank Indonesia deputy governor Budi Rochadi said.

Hello balipoders,

I have questions regarding taxes and was hoping you could help me:

1. When buying and selling a land, I've been told that everybody declare a lower value in order to pay the 5% of buying/selling taxes on a lower amount. Is that right? And if yes what is your opinion about it? Do you find it risky? One of my friend told me I should declare a value of 2,5 million /are instead of 15 million/are. He also told me that if I really insist on declaring the real value of the property, my notary will most likely ask me to pay the taxes on the real value of the land and then declare a much lower value to the tax office and keep the difference in his pocket. And apparently there is not much I can do about it...

2. Same goes for the capital gain tax when selling a property. My same friend told me most nominees don't pay it and apparently the government never looks after it (as unbelievable as it may seems!). He told me to be careful with my nominee as he could ask me 30% of the added value "to pay" the tax on capital gain whereas he would keep those 30% in his pocket. Actually he told me the tax rate on capital gains is 30%, but on the Internet, in some sites I found 20%, in others that it was only 5% (probably meaning that it is included in the seller tax)... so I'm a bit confused. Anybody knows the real rate? And is true that capital gains tax is seldom paid?

I really wanted to do everything legally, but my friend has been living in Indonesia for more than 20 years, has bought many lands, and he told me it's better to do it the “Indonesian way” so I don't know what to do! Please let me know what you think.

Thank you so much guys!!!

Cheers

Hi everybody.

Thinking in star a business in Bali I found in the internet www.inmigrationindonesia.com. In th begining the website looks serious and professional, no doubt that is good.
I started emailing with Mrs Jasmine, answering for info to start a business in Bali. She offers me two diferents ways: PT and PMA.

The question is: Is it really reliably start a business using the PT way ?? She told me, that a PT can be a company with foreign money but with an indonesian as director, and she find an "only name director" to avoid problems and have legal indonesian company. She also offers a document signed by all parts (investors and "only name director") in wich he gives all the control of the company to the investors, and another document saying that the investors can fire the director in any time.
It looks a nice plan, but I also have some doubts... Is that really possible ??

a PMA is more expensive and restricted than a PT, we are thinking is start the business in Bali, but then maybe move to other islands of Indonesia, with a PT is easier because you can operate in all the country, a PMA is restristed to the place in wich you say at the begining.

Any coments ??

Thanks a lot.
