Hello
Could someone please tell me how car tax works? I have been told it will be 7million for 5 years? seems an awful lot? can you not pay by the year? Would be for a Honda Jazz approx 2007 model, in Bali
Thanks for your help
Lindsey
Hi Lindsey, why you not check the STNK (Surat Tanda Nomor Kendaraan Bermotor), the last paper is the registration document, there you can see the amount you've to pay (in case you are late you might have to pay some extra money + some cash if you use an agent)
2 years, how long you've the car, if case it's less the old owner might not pay his share, in case It's more: did you pay the tax last time?
a Honda Jazz (1,5 litre) costs around 2 million / year (PKB)...a Harley costs more than 5 million / year but @Mat: less than 1 million for a car?
you can see in your STNK the sentence "berlaku sampai" (valid till), there you've to check the date!
cheers marc

7 million, for 5 years worth of tax on a 2007 Jazz sounds about right...but I have never heard of paying 5 years upfront. Every year you have to pay your tax, in return the SAMSAT puts a stamp on your STNK (rightbottom side) and left to the stamp is the validity date.
@matt & sakumabali, the tax is a percentage based of the new value of the car, this percentage decreases over time..hence for a newer car one is likely to pay more tax...unless the older car is something like a BMW, know what I mean?
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
The five years probably refers to the fact that licenseplates have to be renewed every five years, for cars and motorbikes.if you look at the plates there is a month and a year on it until when the plates are valid. At the renewal, all the numbers of engine, chassis etc are re-checked and then you get new plates.I can not help you with the price of that, but i think it is more expensive than the regular yearly extension of the STNK.
Name change of the STNK and owners book also costs,so that is why many indonesians never do that.If you buy from someone private, you need a copy of the sellers ID and a Quittance/Kwitansie,maybe even with a 6000RP stamp(materai) on it ,over wich the seller should put his signature. If the person on the STNK is not the seller, you need proof as well the selller bought it from the person in whose name the STNK is.(Kwitansie and copy of ID again.)
