Getting back to the original post, that being about immunizations in Bali, I have more of a question than a comment.

To be truly effective, aren’t most immunizations supposed to be administered before exposure? For certain, that applies to malaria.

Thinking about shots, our three boys have had them all, and our puppy just had her last, but I haven’t had one since moving here.

Talking to my doc not too long ago at Bumrungrad, I asked about this. His opinion was no...even for Hep. But, he did smile as he said, “if you go back to the states, they will likely quarantine you while they inject you with every immunization known to man.” Knowing that he is US Board Certified, as well as certified by the Royal College of Surgeons, I didn’t laugh.

Shots for what May I ask?
I have been to Bali many- many- many -many- times not "ever" a shot.
Warning: please do your research prior to seeking these shots as they have severe adverse reactions.

I was laughing while reading your post Gina, reminding myself that I haven’t gotten any of my shots either, including for distemper! :D BUT, as I said, our new puppy has had all of hers!

Personally, I agree with you 100% as far as a visit ONLY to Bali goes. However, there are visitors who end up exploring other islands while they are here, and it is essential, for example, when visiting Sumba (and many other areas) to consider that chances are too high for getting malaria.

Also, even for Hep B, many doctors will argue that even in Bali, it’s not such a bad idea.

That being said, any excuse to NOT get a shot is good for me! Cheers!

I never get shots for Sulewesi but I had everyone when working in Irian Jaya because there are some real nasties there.

Jimbo! "I had everyone".... Is that a Freudian slip? :P

No matter if it is, as it would understandable (given where you have been working for so long).

For what it's worth, I have never had any shots before entering Bali. I guess I have been lucky considering the mosquitoes love my blood. On my first arrival I looked like I had the chicken pox---totally covered in bites. Of course, once I discovered mosquito quills, not so much of a problem. Sari Puspa lotion is a must!! Did not realize that leaving fruit around can cause a swarm of biting ants and mosquitoes within minutes once the sun begins to set. My legs were covered in ants and mosquitoes. Ouch!!!!

As far as injures go; I had a dislocation of my wrist and elbow; went to Ubud Clinic and was told to go to the hospital in Sanglah to be put under before the doctor could put them back in place. Instead, I opted to go to a massager--old man in Payangan. Although my dislocation injures were four months old (by the time I decided to do something about my injures) he worked on me a couple of times and magically he corrected the problem. He said he never had seen a human be able to withstand dislocations without having them put back in place as soon as possible. I almost died with pain the first couple of weeks after the accident; but hey, I survived. He truly is a gifted healer.   Also only cost me a banton with an offering of $5.00. Amazing.

It definitely is worth knowing a couple of magical healers. Unfortunately, in America we lack that expertise.

Mozzies are attracted to people with alot of sugar in their blood. If you eat garlic daily they will not get near you to bite. It make the blood smell and taste like sulphur to them.Works well. And dont use strong smelling perfumy things.

Getting shots has nothing to do with mozzies. Bali has NO MALARIA if that what your referring to.
A great "holistic" healing university is near you in Seattle Washington called "Bastyr University". Please do look them up they do homeopathy, naturopathy, herbs, refexology, ayurveda, reiki, energy healing.................etc

Ibu Robin From the "Bumi Sehat" clinic in Ubud has many holistic healers volunteer their time to her clinic,a great place to visit next time you need assistance, keep it in mind.

Hi Gina,

Sorry, I couldn't resist my commenting on your statement,

to them? I was just wondering who is the mosquito-speaking person who asked their opinion?
Keep on smiling.

not a mere opinion.
I did tests years ago, trying to see what provokes these mozzies to bite.

Its also interesting that people that have to take the glucose tolerance tests (6-7hrs of non stop sugarwater drinking )have flies following them after drinkng all this sugary substance.
I Had to have this test done in my teens,I remember this happening, flies were trying to get IN MY MOUTH.
Same applies for mozzies, they like sugary blood.
