Antique Hunting

Postby mrbagus on Wed Dec 19, 2007 2:12 am

Hi to everyone. Just new to this.
I'm just inquiring if anyone has any info on looking for antiques in Indo-not antiquities, but old things interesting & collectable & of value of course.
I would like to know how to go about it, ie Where to look, whether I can get good bargains by going into villages as a bule.
Any relevant info & help would be much appreciated. :)

Thank you for the 'welcome' Tina. I guess it's going to be a hard topic to get info about. Just thought I'd give it a go as I'm thinking of dealing in antiques & collectables over there.

My two-cents-worth.

I believe you said you are not looking for antiques per se, but only "old things of value." In Bali, there are practically no real "antiques" to speak of. I realise that some antique dealers claim that their "antiques" are certified by some Government agency, or whatever, but this is Indonesia, and I know from a highly reputable dealer in Seminyak that, with a little "grease"...well, you get my meaning.

You do find "old things" from Bali and from other Indonesian islands. Since it is not my business, I have no idea how one goes about getting them. Based on my observations, one does not just go around Balinese villages looking for old things being sold in "flee markets:" they just don't exist.

However, during my last short trip to Bali, I was struck by the proliferation of "antique shops." On Monkey Forest, Ubud, I counted no less that five antique shops, replacing the numerous jewlery shops of few years ago. In Legian - Seminiak is even more noticable.

Good luck.
Keep on smiling.

Mimpimanis,

Probably along the road up and pass Tegallalang, there are many such signs. :D

Thanks Tintin & Mimpimanis. Didn't expect to see so much response, but it is good to see.
I don't expect to find anything at the markets or much in Bali for that matter.

Yes you would have a much easier time than native indo antique dealers.......at having you and your money separated from each other. How can anyone spend 5 min on the ground here and even consider what you are. I love asking this question - have you ever been here? Bali is one of the world's largest markets in all things related to the home, including antiques and old things. I am a traveled old stuff enthusiast and can tell you Bali has few rivals when it comes to the trade.
