Hi Everyone, new to the forum . Finding it really useful and great to talk to people who " have been there and done that " !! . I am planning to shift to Bali in April next year , for 1-2 years. My husband is working on an oil rig in the Timor sea ( but not employed by Indonesians - so no work permit ) Living in Bali would be much closer for him. He would be going in or out of Bali every 3 weeks. Our dilemma is - will he do this on a tourist visa or is there such a thing as a multi entry social visa ? Also - if myself and my children are on social visa's is this practical for 2 years ? and what happens to our visa if we want to holiday in another country - does the social visa get cancelled when you leave Indonesia ?? ( Have searched the forum etc - but still unclear ??) Any info appreciated.
So many questions :-) If your husband is working in Indonesia he will have a work permit. His location in the Timor sea does not make it clear if who he is working for and how he will get to the rig. I suspect it is not in Indonesia waters from the way you say it so:
He can come to Bali on a tourist visa which he has to leave after a month.
You and the children however are in a much more difficult position unless you husband has a work permit. Getting a social visa means get a sponsor in Indonesia which is difficult if you do not know anyone. The social visa is for two months extendable up to six months after which you must leave the country and start again.
Either way its a difficult time. Need more info to help any further but you could try the Indonesian Embassy in OZ for more details. If your husband does not work in Indonesia you are going to find it very difficult or very expensive to solve your problems.

Thanks for response Jimbo - I know everyone gets sick of visa questions. My husband can not get a work permit. He will probably just use tourist visa. I am hoping to get an indonesian sponsor and get the social visa . I know we will have to keep leaving after 6 months. I'm still not sure what happens if I leave Indonesia during the 6 months ie. to holiday somewhere else - does this cancel the social visa and do I need to then get another one before re-entering?? How do all these expats live in Bali without work permits ???
If you go out during the 6 months, your visa is cancelled, you need to get a new one.
There exists a multiple entry business visa valid for 1 year, but with this one you have to go out of the country after each 60 days of stay.
Your husband does need a working permit, however if he can not get one, it would still be safer to get a single entry business visa (extendable up to 6 months) for him rather than a tourist visa.
Business visas are relatively easy to obtain in KL or Singapore, only sponsor letter needed.
