Now, if I wasn't quite so lazy and people here weren't quite so clever, perhaps I would search more thoroughly on this information before asking the following question:
Can anyone please outline their experience of obtaining 6 month tourist visa - timelines, cost etc. Hopefully we will be spending extended amount of time (beyond our normal 30 day visits) very shortly and I would be interested in hearing others' feedback.
Many thanks
Larnes
You might want to hope others aren't as lazy as you and bother responding

here's a lazy answer....6 months "tourist" visa is not available.
now not so lazy answer but far from complete...you can choose an other option, sosbud or business visa for example. btw...how lazy are you? you just have to click the link below the page that says BALI IDE.
goodluck, friendly greetings Gilbert.
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
You could also try looking through the archives but of course that would require some effort on your part. :D

OK, I firmly believe that laziness should be rewarded as it's the main driver of progress in the world - a lazy guy invented the wheel, and here is something I'm interested in finding out too.
Talked to some Germans that got their "tourist" visa from their travel agency in Germany and although they only wanted to stay the "normal" 4 weeks/30 days they had received the 211 Visa which is for 6 months stay - they hadn't had to find a sponsor or anything of that nature but got the visa more or less as easily as the usual tourist visa. I saw the visa so it is bona fide.
Hi markit.
I don't exactly know all the possible numbers for visa's, but if I remember right...the number 211 relates to the tourist visa that is valid for 60 days. not 6 months. However there's a ofcourse the possibilty that the "Jerry" Travel Agent works together with a Bali based travelagent, and the so called agent of the Bali travelagency act's as a sponsor for the 6 months visa. Therefor they didn't need to search for an sponsor themself.
There's another string on the forum, about the renewal of a 211 visa, that legally it's not possible to renew, but there are tourist who have done so....I guess where there's a will (and money) there's a way.
Okidoki Markit take care and friendly greetings to all, Gilbert.

A "211" visa is NOT valid for a 6 month stay, but for 60 days only, except in accordance with authorisation from Immigration Authority. Authorisation can be given for an extension, according to the law in 3 of the 4 cases the visa kunjungan has been delivered.Originally Posted by Markit
If the visa has been delivered for:
- inter-governmental issues,
- business purposes,
- social or cultural reasons.
It can be extended.
However, an extension of the Visa Kunjungan should not be granted if the visa has been delivered for:
- tourism purpose
The Visa Kunjungan (211) can be extended up to 5 times (meaning up to 7 months), each time for 30 days. This does not mean an automatic acceptance from immigration for an extension of the visa. It is a request made by th applicant, his/her sponsor or his/her representant. The acceptance or the refusal of the extension are however not based on subjective criterias and any refusal MUST be given in the form of a written statement (named Surat Keterangan Penolakan) listing the reason(s) why the extension has been refused and remitted to the applicant and/or his/her sponsor. The applicant or the sponsor in return has the choice to accept the refusa or to challenge it if there is ground for it.
The first two extensions require an acceptance of the Kantor Imigrasi. (Personal appreciation: Very easy to get on your own)
The third and the fourth extension require an acceptance of the Kantor Imigrasi+the Kantor Kanwil. (personal appreciation: still easy to get on your own but requires a bit of time since you will have to to the "courrier" in between KanIm and KanWil)
The very exceptionnel fifth extension, requires the acceptance of the Kantor Imigrasi+the Kantor Kanwil+the Ditjen Imigrasi in JKT. Not to say that it is mere impossible to get it.
The legal fee for each extension is IDR 250.000 (all inclusive :) )
Note also that a Visa Kunjungan (211) is first granted for a maximum of 60 days. It is not rare to find embassies which would deliver it only for 30 days... It all depends on where you apply and the goodwill of the "atase imigrasi" in place.
Anyone wanting more informations on the above is free to post or PM me. I'll be glad to point at the specific article of law concerned by any information given.

1. The number of visas are called Index (or Indeks in BI) and have been trimed down to 13 (previously 43... You can imagine the mess) in April 2006 by the "Peraturan Direktur Jenderal Imigrasi RI nomor F434.IZ.01.10 tahun 2006 tentang Bentuk, Ukuran, Redaksi, Jenis dan Indeks, serta peneraan visa."Originally Posted by gilbert de jong

Great answer and very informative. As usual the fault is entirely mine in defining exactly what I meant. I and I would guess many of those having extended stays on the island are also here on the 211 Visa - absolutely correctly you state that it is not for 6 months but issued for "Social" reasons (if I recall correctly tourism was not given as a reason for visit, but not 100% sure) for an initial period of 2 months (60 days) from the Indonesian embassy in in London after I utilized the identity card of my "Sponsor" to apply a month in advance of my flight time with a valid passport of at least 1 years duration.
Now all the above was not required of my German acquaintances. They submitted their passports to the TUI travel shop in their village and where presented with the 211 visa as being the "normal" visa.
None of the above affects in the slightest what you say KaBim but seemed a little strange to me as I was made to jump through a number of hurdles that my "Jerrys" (Gil  ) where not. Not complaining or anything I just found it interesting that there seem to be so many differences and trying to understand the system, if you can call it that, a little better.
Thanks again.
Hi Markit,
hehehe yeah I thought you would like that (jerry's). I am reading "A bridge too far", so that's why that popped up in my mind.
Btw, must be very hard...jumping through a hurdle, I would try jump over it, or jump through a hoop, hihihi. I'm just joking Markit and don't meant to be an ass.
Friendly greetings...Gilbert.
