VISA RUN

Postby mydewa on Sat Aug 02, 2008 2:36 am

Hi Guys,

My son and his girlfriend are meeting me in Bali in 2 weeks, they are coming from Pennsylvania where they have been working at a summer camp for 3 months. They were only coming to Bali for 30 days but have decided to stay for 50 days before going onto Aust. then to canada(6months working ski resort).

My question is which country is it best to do a visa run. Malaysia or Singapore. I have checked flights for K.L. and they can get return tickets for $250Au. Is this a good price (Air Asia) or is it cheaper to go to Singapore. I havent been able to get a cheap price online for Den-Sing-Den.

They haven't been able to apply for a 60day visa as they don't get much time off from camp and when they do they are kinda of out of the way from everything.

Also I applied for a social visa for me and my younger son as we will be in bali for at least two months maybe 3-4. I had sponsor letter ect. Visas came back but I am unsure what type it is. It is a 211 so is that tourist or social or is it as they say and they are one and the same now. I am totally confused.

And another question how long before your 60 days are up do you need to renew at immigration.

Sorry for all the questions.

Hi Pina,

I'm always interested to look at visa run options. Generally Air Asia fares are good and this may make KL attractive compared with Singapore. Last year the KL Indo Embassy took several days to do a visa, but now friends report it can be done the same day - apply early, pick up late afternoon. Also, if you are planning to stay a few days, living in KL can be economical.

I just did some quick checks now on flights for Aug 8 - to just pick a date. Air Asia offers a one-way trip for Rp 1,510,000 (taxes etc included) - about Au$179. This makes your $250 retunr look pretty good. For comparison I checked Lion Air from Denpasar to Batam and then you would take the frequent ferry service - about 40 min I recall. They do not have direct flights so you change at Jakarta. On Aug 8 they can do Rp 1,408,000 (taxes etc included) - about $169.

So the prices are similar - but a single flight to KL is simple. What other options do people explore for Singapore trips?

Your question about the 60 days. My understanding is that you must leave Indonesia within the 60 days. If the aim is to get social visas in KL or Singapore, then you would need to get sposor letters from someone in Bali before you go.

Thanks ronb,

I think the KL route is the way to go. i will get my son to book his tickets now.

Can he just get a VOA visa on his return to Bali from KL. As he will be doing 28 nights(on the 30 day voa) Bali then 1 night KL and then 22 nights bali.(30 day voa)

Hi
Since a couple of yrs back you can apply for a visa B211, in your homecountry (the old B411, Social Budaya doesn't exist any more). It's good for 60 days and after that you can extend it up to 4 times, monthly, with a total of 6 months. You go to Kantor Imigrasi for the extension, no need to leave for KL or Singapore. What you need for the extension though is an Indonesian sponsor. May it be a friend or an agent. Using an agent is a bit more expensive but so convinient and free of problems. They pick up your passport and deliver it back and you don't have to show up at Imigrasi in person, except the time when your fingerprints has to be taken. Shop around for the best price, can vary a lot from agent to agent. Have used an agent many times and it has always worked very smooth.

Hi Pina, you need to start the renewal process 7-10 days prior to the expiry, 3 days would be the minimum. If you use an agent they will do it all for you and you don't have to remember -depending on whether you leave your passport with them or not.
If you applied for a 211 as a social visit, with a sponsor letter, then you probably have a 211 social budaya. You should use the same sponsor for your extensions, as you are technically their guest in Indonesia and they have taken responsibility for you.

Thanks again Freogirl,

It is all so confusing. i think I will use an agent then we wont have to worry about it.

My sponsor is my boyfriend so that not a problem we just not sure how long we are going to stay. It all depends if Dewa can get a visa to Aust. or not.

If you have a social 211 visa the name of your sponsor will be written on the visa. If there is no name on the visa you must have the tourist 211 visa.

I went to the visa agent only 3-4 days before my visa expired and it was no problem. Using an agent is very easy but it costs about 530K Rp. I never tried applying directly to immigration because everyone made it sound like they would give you a lot of hassle. I went to Immigration once to inquire, and they said that if my sponsor did not have an ID card in Bali then I could not extend (it is common for people not to have an ID card if they are from another part of Indonesia because its expensive to get one).

Just make sure you don't have any problem with your sponsor while you are in Indonesia because you can't extend without their magic signature. ;)

Why dont you get a 60day tourist visa? you can apply for them at indo embassys in australia. if not keep looking on air asia for good deals, i got my flight to bali from KL for free, just paid the taxes. I signed up to their 'red alert' email so i can keep on checking up for some good deals. :P

We paid for our staff's KTPs in Lombok, so as they would be able to travel to and from Bali. (After one got sent back from Padang Bai on arrival without one) Made took them to get them and they cost Rp15,000 each. Now he does say this is a "freind" price.

One of them lost her's and went alone to make a replacement and though I don't know how much she paid it was definitely less than Rp50,000.

Made made a KIPS in Bali, a temporary ID if you stay at a place other than your home - and valid for six months and cost Rp50,0000.

So not overly expensive and worth paying for a sponsor to get one if they can't afford one themselves.

You are definitively right, KTP ain't expensive. The cost of it varies all over Indonesia because they are defined by Peraturan Daerah (kapubaten or kota). Therefore each city or kabupaten is free to fix the cost of it. Generally speaking the price varies from "free" to about IDR 20K.
The reason why many people don't have KTP is to be found more in the fact that there was no enforcement of the law until recently. While still poorly implemented, the new law on Administration Population list a few penalties for those who don't have KTP or any other civil acts (akta kelahiran,...etc) and the government is trying to encourage the population to get through the process. Things are moving little by little.
