Visa run to Kuching?

Postby twiceaman on Thu Jun 19, 2008 8:01 pm

I see Airasia now flies to the city of Cats from DPS. I am surprised there has been no mention of this on the forum. Is there a problem with doing the 'run' to Kuching?

I may be wrong but I am sure I have heard that although their is an embassy or consulate in Kucing that it only deals with Indonesians, that you can not get visas issued there.

If I am wrong I am sure someone will tell us

In Kuching or KK you can get a pre-arranged visa (e.g. social visa) if the visa is addressed there, but you can not apply for a tourist visa.

But I assume its ok if you are after a normal 30day on arrival as you are leaving Indo? Unless I am missing something again?

The flights look very cheap and I have read its a nice place to hang out for a day.

Just FYI, I got my social visa there, and the only problem was that once I applied they initially said I would only have one month initially (instead of two months as is normal). However, after I appealed to them, they went ahead and gave me two months.

I wasn't aware that you can only get a "pre-arranged" visa there- my impression from the guest house where I was staying was that any visa could be applied for there. But I can't say for sure because mine was of the "pre-arranged" type.

One thing for sure: you can't get a visa on arrival at the border in Borneo/ kalimantan...

Should be OK for the 30 day visa run if you fly to Indonesia.
2 years ago, when I was there, it was possible to obtain a 30 days visa on arrival on the land route from Kuching to Pontianak, but this may have changed since then.

I tried about a week ago to buy a ticket on the Kuching/DPS service and was told by Air Asia that they no longer fly this route. Despite the choice still being listed on the website. Disappointing.
