Yes I know that Roy, so why does the argument have to continue?

Good Grief Woman! I am NOT the one continuing the argument! READ the string for Pete's sake!

“I am not referring to this thread but in general - where you have to be right in everything that you say.”

OH PLEASE! Are you serious with that comment?

Are you suggesting that Syd should be talked out of any sort of non profit work here in Bali with a sosbud visa and based on this absurdity from Jimbo? Are you further suggesting that I should just “roll with that” baloney and not confront it?

I’m sorry darling, I ain’t that kind of man, nor is my wife that kind of woman!

There are many expats on Bali that I know personally, and very well, and they are on all sorts of visas and they actively engage in non profit, non paid, charity work. Their visa is NEVER an issue! Period!

Maybe it is that the lack of understanding this fact is only an indicator of a real lack of such charity work by forum participants here! I don’t know, but it sure seems that way to me!

Jimbo will say that a kitas visa is required for unpaid charity work. HE IS WRONG!

Mimps, I am not about to apologize to you, or anyone else. If you don’t like reading my posts, then don’t read them.

And BaliLife! You have NO idea of my business successes, or my personal wealth. You don’t impress me a bit, as it is clear there is nothing to be impressed about. No man every talks about another man being the little man, except of course, for the little man himself. Little boy, you have so much to learn!

HI....being the OP on this thread, I went back to my original post/questions thinking, "What have I done?" I wanted to quote (haven't figured that out), but basically I asked for varying opinions and thoughts, saying that I understand that there is "theory" - meaning "rules/laws" and "reality" - what actually happens. I'm interested in both.

STEP BACK - When I joined this Forum only a few weeks ago, I joined feeling that a forum is exactly that, a forum. By definition (to me) it means that many people from many backgrounds and many varying experiences offer their opinions/thoughts/feelings on whatever topics and questions are posed. OF COURSE people will disagree. It is human nature. In my honest opinion, being an adult, I am or should be able to take in all the opinions and information given and then make judgements or decisions. This forum isn't the only place and will not be the only place I search and seek out information.

I have also read a few laments on here that people join, get what they want and then scram, never to be heard of again. Posting this as a new member, I can understand the sentiment. In fact, within days after joining and asking a question, I was PMed by a "regular member" with some information accompanied by the comment that to post "on the forum" would surly bring on some kind of disparaging words or fight. PAUSE

Hmmmm...not very encouraging as a new member and again, being honest - quite intimidating to think a question or any kind might end up a "fight" amoung "regular members".

I think this is/should be/can be a valuable forum for those of us contemplating a move to Bali and a great place for "discussion" for those of you living there.

This is NOT meant to fuel the fire, but I guess that is my point exactly, some people may view this post as exactly that, some may think I'm being arrogant or unappreciative, some may think I'm intelligent ( :) ) and trying to help and so on and so on and so on....

Anyway, as the OP I did get information through it all and thank everyone as it would also be true (I would hope) that everyone, in their own way, is trying to be helpful.

Thank you.

Nice post Syd, and thanks for your level headed perspective. I over reacted and I apologize for over-reacting.

My venomous reaction was only because of the false information that performing un paid charity work on anything less than a kitas visa is breaking the law. In my mind, leaving such an inaccuracy to stand without challenge could potentially cause someone considering volunteer charity work in Bali to opt out of such activity from the fear of doing something wrong.

However, as you point out, any reasonable person would likely consult other sources of information beyond this forum. Well done, and thanks again.

Thanks sj for this post. You are exactly right that the forum should have valuable information and provide productive discussion. And very often it does. But then there are times when these feuds take over and consume much space, which is a pity.

Anyhow, I hope you continue with the forum and don't disappear.

Hello everyone!

I'm new on this forum! Well..not excactly new..but I've never posted before!
Can I ask a question on this topic?

I'm going to Bali in september to find work, because I want to be with my Indonesian partner. I know it's very difficult to find work, and that it doesn't pay well, but the only other option is to just sit at home and wait for my boyfriend to come home :)
My plan is to just ask anybody if they know a job for me. I did a TEFL course so I can work as a teacher (only problem is that I'm not a native English speaker... ). But I also have a degree in Tourism.

My question is..How big is the chance that an Indonesian company will want to do ALL that paperwork to hire me? I think very small.. :|

If that won't work out..then I'm forced to return to my home country after a few months and work there. Then come back to Indonesia when I have enough money and do nothing again....but to see my partner :)

Hi San

Try contacting some of the larger English language schools from home first. English First is often recruiting teachers you should be able to find them with Google.

Hi mimpimanis!
Thanks for your reply!
I tried that already...but because I'm not a native speaker they won't get me a working permit.. I hate those rules..I'm a qualified teacher and I speak good English! But only native speakers can get a working permit for Indonesia. I wonder how that is in other Asian countries..
Because working as an English teacher is not going to work out, I'm looking for other options :) Does anybody has experience with working for an Indonesian company? Do they hire expats? And do they want to do all the paperwork for you? Or are there any international companies that are looking for staff?

Many thanks!

Bali is a difficult place to find work and it looks like you have just lost your best options. You could try visiting and trying to find work whilst you were there but as many who have tried will tell you it is not easy. The only other alternative is to perhaps set up a company but that can be difficult also.

Yes, both Indonesian and Indonesian/foreign partnership companies hire expats, and there are plenty of them here, particularly in Jakarta, but here in Bali too.

Companies that hire foreign workers are supposed to follow the principle of only hiring a foreigner whose work experience, skills, knowledge, expertise, etc. cannot be found within the Indonesian labor pool.

Another good place to look is the classified section of both The Bali Advertiser and The Bali Times. Both papers are English language and geared towards expats. They are both available on line.

Sure San, you have a chance, but as Jimbo pointed out, it isn't easy. Most of the expats I know are engaged in some sort of entrepreneurial activity, and those that aren’t are usually GMs of five star resorts, executive chefs, or teachers.

Oh I see that I looked over Jimbo's post :o Sorry!
But he's right...I think my best chance was to work as a teacher, but they don't want any nice Dutch girls  ...
Well..then I just try to find something else..and if not..I just go back to Holland :(

San, you could try to contact some timeshare companies when you're in Bali; they're always looking for sales/customer service staff. I don't think I'd like to work in this field, but it may be up your alley.
