Richard is totally correct. I've lost sight of that point over the years, but his point is dead on as to whose responsibility it is to report the "tamu."

I know years ago (about 10) when I was staying in Bali for 8 months flying to Singers every 60 days that the owner of the room I rented used to register me & any other guests renting a room to Polisi, never did I pay anything or have to go with him, he just wrote namesw & passport numbers down I think...
Whenever we stay in Hubbies village in Tuban, his uncle whom is head of the Bnajar & has a photo copy of mine & Maddy's passports takes these to police station...
Has never cost anything!!!

Ok I just want to put my 2 cents into this. If you are in a hotel, losmen, homestay etc it is the owners responsibility to register the guest with the police. If however you are staying in a private apartment that you are renting it will be yours.

I used to stay in such places or with extended family for months at a time and when I wanted to leave the country there was hassle at the immigration because I had not registered.

Better to be sure than sorry. Go to the police if you are unsure. Ask for a receipt if they want money and if they refuse you then you know its a con.

Jimbo writes,

I disagree. In that case, it would be responsibility of the land lord. Even in my case, married to a Balinese, with kids, and not renting, (our houses are under my wife's name) the responsibility to report "my presence" is with her.

Next time I am at the consulate in Australia I will ask them their opinion. It surprised me that I was required to register but neither they, nor immigration on entry, advised me as such. How would I know to do it?
It was my second landlord that told me I had to register, I had been here for months living in a different rental property and the first landlord didn't mention a thing. Probably did it himself at no cost.
We have always reported our presence to the village kapala, and provided copies of passport and marriage certificate. But I am told that applies to anyone, not just foreigners.

Thanks everyone for your input anyway!

The Kepala desa has never asked for copies of passport or our marriage certificate.

I do find it amusing though that I was told I "had to" vote in the elections for kepala desa, so I did. I even got papers through to vote in the general election, though this time I refused!

In UK cause I could not be on the electoral register at my mum's place I am unable to vote!

So that must vary from village to village too - they really do just make it up as they go along!

Some owners don't like to go and report anything to the police, even though they're supposed to. (I can imagine why.) The owner of my house is one of those, so I do it myself.

How much depends on who's "on duty", but I've only ever had to pay once per six months...the police in Sanur charge between Rp20-50,000. (I have a SosBud visa). My last one, a couple of weeks ago was Rp30,000.
