    Holidaymakers escorted off 'heavy' flight

Two holidaymakers were forced off a Virgin Blue plane heading from Melbourne to Bali after flight staff told them the plane was too heavy to fly.

Federal police forced two men from the plane at Tullamarine airport at the start of the Easter weekend on Thursday after extra fuel was needed to fly through bad weather to Bali, the Sunday Herald Sun newspaper reports.

The plane's captain initially asked for volunteers willing to leave the flight but when nobody raised their hands flight staff attempted to remove the last two people to board.
Police were called after the two men refused to leave.

A witness told the newspaper the other passengers sympathised with the angry travellers.

"They had taken care to book their flights, they were ready to go to Bali and then they were told they couldn't," they said.

Virgin spokeswoman Melissa Thomson described the incident as "totally regrettable".
The trouble comes after a broken baggage belt left Jetstar and Qantas passengers with no luggage when they reached their destinations on Friday.

The incident caused 18 Jetstar flights and 17 Qantas flights to leave Melbourne's Tullamarine airport without any luggage.

Did they get any kind of compensation? I am sure now there is going to be a mad rush for everyone to get on the plane.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.

It's interesting that they must offload something like 160Kg - when the max allowable take-off weight could be 150-250 tonne (depending on aircraft type). You would thing there could be some airports where they would say - only 160 Kg over - doesn't matter.

If you must off-load people, then last-on to be first-off is about as good a rule as you could get. Another option could be to offload some baggage, but maybe the next flight is one day later so the baggage-less passengers would not be happy.
