Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.
It depends on where one stays. These backpacker havens have no reputation to loose...they will still get customers irrespective of the bad publicity.
Mat, you might acuse me of being naive but I do find that surprising in Bali!
Perhaps not so in Kuta, which I don't call part of Bali
I can honestly say that I have stayed in hundred, if not thousands, of hotels all over the globe in my short life and have never been ripped off by anybody. (possibly cause I don't have shite worth stealing some might say?)
And if you look at the video he doesn't seem to actually steal anything, except some chips to eat? And as far as I know curiosity isn't a crime - it's not desired but if there's anything you don't want other people to look at I've always put it in the hotel safe and assumed that anything else will and does get examined by hotel staff - they are also human.
Be honest - anything goes missing in a hotel room, who's the first person they suspect?
I didn't say the man had taken anything, but he was looking. That's what didn't surprise me. However;
I had money taken from my hotel room here in the north by staff. How do I know it was staff? Because it was in a small wad of 50 pound notes and only one was taken also one packet of cigarettes from a carton hoping I wouldn't notice it. Also the post office here [other people you should be able to trust] has twice taken money or something of value sent to my fiance [at the time]. There seems to be a culture of 'sharing' that often goes as far a stealing in my experience. Yes stupid me for putting temptation in front of them.
You are lucky not to have shared my experiences here and I hope that continues for eternity.

I don't like to be disturbed during my several-day stay in a hotel.
Thanks for sharing that with us, I'm sure!!![]()
