Having already booked our accomodation (1br villa) about 800m-1km north of Jalan Raya Ubud on Jalan Sriwedari, another couple have decided to join us in Ubud for 7 nights in May.
Being their first trip ever to Bali they would like to be as close as possible (short walk) to our accomodation (we are staying at Villa Manis) so if anyone can tell me of some nice-ish places not too far out on Jalan Sriwedari (must have pool and aircon) then I'd be grateful for any suggestions.
They don't want to spend more than $80 per night.
Well, you are not being overwhelmed with replies, so I took a lunch time walk up Jalan Sriwedari since I have never been up there.
I did not find Villa Manis even though I went 1.5 Km. So I thought I just missed it I will see it on the way back, but no luck. Tripadvisor pinpoints a location, and I certainly walked past that spot - maybe the sign is very small.
I saw several places, from 1.2 to 1.5 Km up which are impressive and expensive - more than the suggested $80 budget. They are:
* Ubudgreen - Ubud Green Resort Bali Indonesia - Best discount hotel rates - a guy told me they are only a few months old, have 16 villas, are currently full because of the "promotional" prices - you will see Agoda has them marked down from prices like $547 to $169.
* Luwak Ubud Villas - Luwak Ubud Villas - they have 3 bedroom villas at $590 and 2 bedroom at $390, and in off peak times (like May) they will let you book a room from a villa which could mean you are sharing the living spaces with the guests in the other bedroom(s). The room rates are from $180 to $225. I stopped for a drink as it was about to rain, and talked with Made who was on duty and with Cok who was a manager I think. He showed me a 3 bedroom villa which was built around a small swimming pool which is separate from the bigger pool near the restaurant. It was truly impressive - but then at that price I guess you would expect something special. There was no-one in this villa, so who knows - in off season you may be able to bargain. They gave me color brochures - but the web-site shows the same photos.
* Villa Gaia - Bali Villa Gaia - Home which is around $600 per night.
Then I saw a sign which said. Across the ricefields I saw its roof near the river valley - it would be 2 or 3 bedroom, and I think its price would be similar - but could be a bit lower because it seems lacks the Internet marketing.House for Rent with Swimming Pool Contact: Nyoman Sandi 081 338 257 623
I saw 2 other properties labelled Taman Amartha and Taman Asri - but cannot find anything on the Internet.
The bottom line is that Jalan Sri Wedari is not a street with low cost homestays. For the 1st Km there is no obvious accommodation, but laundries, motorbike mechanics, dentists, community nurse, artists, etc. Then you get to the area with rice fields and there are new upmarket places. With all this building, I wonder how long the rice fields will survive.
Your efforts here are very much appreciated and surely you've gone well above what's expected with your response.
I'm not even sure Villa Manis is signposted as it's her private residence with another villa adjacent. Naturally I've asked the villa owner for her help but she's come back with a blank also except for the suggestion of Ubud Green Resort, same as you.
I've also posted this accomodation search on other forums with not much luck, and now with your very own personalised accomodation search I'm beginning to think that getting something close by with a pool is going to be near impossible for the price.
The only thing close to what we're after would be a house on the same street called Tidak Apa Apa which I saw on VRBO, but it doesn't have a pool.
I may need to have a total rethink about where the other couple are going to stay.
Thanks once again for your thorough and very informative response Ron. I'm stunned and amazed (and very grateful) that you actually took a considerable chunk of time out of your day to help me with my quest.
I know your face now and I'll be sure to buy you a drink if I bump into you in May.
Many thanks
Skiggy
You're welcome. I will look forward to that drink.
It is probably worth ringing the number on that sign too see how good Nyoman's English is and to see what he/she is asking, and if May is available. You have nothing to lose.
I'm familiar with this house- it's not much more than a year old now. Don't know if it is available for short term rent (7 nights)
maybe by the month judging by the last tenants stay.Call Nyoman as RonB suggests.
Taman Amartha are long term rentals by the year
if you want a swimming pool you might need to resort to one of the hotels with multiple villa shared pool like Pertiwi bungalows
in Monkey Forest street-which altho central to the tourist area - the bungalows are set back enough to be somewhat private and you wouldn't think you were 'on the main road'
update on this house- the owners' occupy that house in January February & July August
outside of those months it is available on a monthly basis-
if your friends wanted to get it for only a week- then $80 day could possibly do it-
pm me if you need a landline to call Nyoman from overseas
I've had a bit of a re-think about where they'd be better off staying.
Now I'm thinking it might be better to put them on MF Rd in somewhere like Sri Bungalows. We can put them in a nice deluxe room for about $85 which is out the back near the ricefields and away from the road. Staying there means they don't have to rely on us and can go wandering around themselves if they want to.
Hmmm, Nyoman's place does sound interesting though. Where can I get more info on it other than ringing him. How well do you know it? and do you know if he's contactable by email? I think that would be my preferred way of dealing with him.
Thanks once again Meerkat.
Nyoman doesn't have email, but pm me if you want to leave your email and I can ask his son to correspond with you
