- Mangku Pastika Election Banner
All over Bali there are huge banners for the three teams - not just on the main roads - but on quite minor roads in the hills of North Bali we see them. So I am sure they are everywhere in Bali. The one above (snapped today) is opposite the new Hardies Singaraja Plaza.
Cutting and pasting from
http://www.indo.com/news/bali-governor-election.html, the candidates are:
1.
Professor Gede Winasa, the recent Jembrana Regent as the governor candidate paired up with
Alit Putra, the former Badung Regent and also former Bali vice governor as the vice governor.
2.
Cok Budi Suryawan, the former Gianyar Regent as the governor candidate paired up with Police Brigadier
General Nyoman Gde Suweta as vice governor
3. Police Lieutenant
General Made Mangku Pastika as the Governor candidate paired up with Denpasar Mayor
AA Puspayoga as his vice governor.
The Jakarta Post had an article headed
All candidates in Bali poll turn out to be millionaires which listed the wealth of these 6 guys together with how much it has grown over recent years. The information has been assembled by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). From this people may form their own conclusions about how corrupt the candidates may be. Made Mangku Pastika and his running mate come out looking relatively clean - yet even Manku Pastika's wealth has doubled in the last 3 years which is more than you might expect. The full text can be found here:
http://old.thejakartapost.com/Archives/ArchivesDet2.asp?FileID=20080704.D07 There have been a couple of polls where Mangku Pastika seems to be doing OK, but the sample sizes are not big (around 800) and this is the first time that the governor is being directly elected, so there is no track record for polls. So I wouldn't bank on the polls.
Because of his background as police chief, a major theme of his platform is to improve security in Bali so that tourism may grow.
