Just returned from 6 weeks OS unfortunately only 2 of which were in Bali. Did another trip to Amed and once again loved our stay there at Bayu Cottages (would recommend this boutique hotel to anyone). It's good safe snorkelling straight off the beach in front of the hotel . We also tried the Japanese wreck a couple of kms down the coast. It was ok there too, the wreck is only 20 metres of the beach, but crappy large pebble stones to walk over to enter the water. Plenty of coral and marine life can be seen all along the Amed coast.
If you're ever in Amed tried the Sails restaurant just a few 100 metres past Bayu. I highly recommend their food and service which includes free pick up or drop off from any nearby hotels in their courtesy van. Their prices are reasonable and cheaper than what you would pay in the better Seminyak restaurants.
We then drove North along the coast all the way to Lovina then on to Permutran (NW Bali). While staying there we took a Sea Rovers dive boat (great guys) to Menjanjan Island All I can say is WOW. What a great place to snorkel, the visibilty was unbelievable and marine life everywhere. From what the divers who went with us said the diving (to 25metres) was even better. 'll definitely go back there in the future. :)
I was suprised though how dry East and North Bali gets this time of year along the coast. It was almost like being back in OZ durring summer.
Yes, it seems like what I imagine arid parts of Africa could be like. - But then go the same place in the rainy season and you won't believe the difference.Originally Posted by aquaman
It is similar to the north east corner of Java where the Baluran National park is - another place worth visiting.
I prefer Amed to Pemuteran and also love the Bayu Cottages. I like that I can just walk into the water to snorkel as I have a fear of dee water. 8)

Aquaman posted in Oct 2009, and it was dry then.
