Default Shipping stuff to Bali from Malaysia/Singapore

    Hi Everyone!

This is the best forum for Bali expatriates yet! I have lurked and registered but still awaiting approval from the board admin. Wonder if there is anything that I can do to speed up the approval? ;)

I have one question that is bugging me for a while. My partner and I are in the midst of moving from Malaysia to Bali but we have this huge lot of furnitures/antiques that we have problem shipping. I have been lurking on this board and read about the horrific stories of high custom *charges* and hidden costs. So, my questions:

    1) Can someone recommend a legitimate/trustworthy shipping agent from Malaysia/Singapore?
    2) What are the costs and procedures involved?
    3) I heard that it is best to ship the container in an Indonesian name to avoid unnecessary 'disappointment'. Is that true? Can any kind samaritans out there help us?

    Thanks in advance guys!!!

This is a “sticky wicket” indeed. And you are right, the duty, or taxes can easily be as much as 50% of the declared value of the goods on import to Indonesia.

For many years, I have used two cargo companies, DHL for all my air freight, and CAS Cargo for all my container freight. You are obviously in need of a good container cargo shipper. In the past, for friends, who like you, wanting to move here with lots of their goods from home, I have turned them over to CAS Cargo, who has a vast international network they work with.

Details for contact with them are below. They can act on your behalf as the receiver of this cargo, and can assist greatly.

PS…Keep in mind Sanurian’s warning, “I think one should be very careful promoting Indonesian companies as they are definitely not all infallible.” After all, this is a man who struggles to pay his phone bill every month, and thinks Rp 50,000 for a massage is too much to pay. So…maybe he’ll have a better suggestion for you than mine.

Heya Bert! Thanks for the quick response. The name is summerl. ;) Don't worry about the slip-up, not a problem at all.

Roy!! Thanks for the details. I will definitely check this forwarder out. Please tell me that I am just being paranoid about things going missing and the awfully high taxes. Hearing about them and reading from some of the posts on this board really gets me down....hence, I appreciate if you could tell me some good news. Thanks bunch!
