I have been to:

Bali of course (several times) from Gillimanuk, Denpasar, Ulu Watu, Gunung AGung, Ubud, etc.
Surabaya (3 -4 times)
Solo
Makassar- (was born there - a visit after)
and its surroundings including the islands called: Kayangan, Lae-Lae, and Selayar Jogya (3 times)
Bandung (several times)
Jakarta (my home town and will be again). Its vicinities: the seasides; Merak, Anyer, Labuan, Pelabuhan Ratu.
Its hills: Puncak.
Its islands: Pulau Seribu (Pelangi, Papa Teo, and the big and famous one - forgot its name).

There was an American expat friend of mine in Jakarta before who instead of taking his annual holiday leave to go back to US or visit other places in the world; he would just spend his time travelling on all and around the Indonesian Archipelago itself.
Anyone like him in this Forum? Or at least would like to do the same?

Places I'd like to go:
Menado and its surroundings such as Lake Tondano. It's great for diving, food, etc.
Toraja to see its culture.
Irian Jaya just so I could say that's where Rockeffeler was canibalised. NO, JUST KIDDING! Am not interested.
Medan just to see how rich the Chinese are in that city...
The Halmaheras

Still haven't been to the commercial islands such as Bintan, etc.

Where I have been

Jakarta - my least favourite capital city I have ever been to.

Bandung - Got stuck here for few weeks. Dont much like citys but did like the surrounding country, volcano trek etc.

Pangandaran - loved it here in the late 80s stayed 6 months.

Dieng Plateau - cold. brrrrr

Yogyakarta - great shopping and of course Borobodor.

Bali - first visit in 1989 many visits since and most recently here for the last 16 months.

Lombok - fell in love with the island and made it my home 11 years ago.

Flores
Sulawesi

Ok..Jakarta..it's actually one of my favourite big cities in the world but I like big cities. Been there many many times inc 6 times this year.
Jogja and environs...maybe 15 times since 2004
Jawa Tengah inc Semarang, Demak, Jepara, Kudus and surrounding areas about 5 times all in the past 12 months
Surabaya
Bandung
Bali of course

Yogya (nice place)
Prambanan (beautiful)
Borobudur (beautiful but very commercialised)
Bromo (have to go there at least once)
Surabaya (hot and hotter)
Lombok (special in it's own way, you love it or will never go back)
Gili tralalalalalawangan
Boatrip from Labuhan Bajo (flores) to Rinca & Komodo (really nice)

Where I want to go to:

Long boattrip from Lombok -> Sumba -> Sumbawa -> Komodo -> Rinca -> Flores
Island trip on Flores / Borneo / Sumatra

Medan; Traffic-jam, every where, hot..hot..hot..
Lake Toba; Beautiful place (dormant super volcano) amazing...
Bukit Lawang; Alot of orang utan, fun place
Berastagi; Nice weather, beautiful view .... with lot's of native fruit; Love Markisah...
Sumatra; Where I was born
Riau
Jakarta; Too crowded for me. hot..hot...hot..
Bandung; Went to school there
Batam; Okay.
Bali; Just Love Bali and want to move there, hopefully..

Where I want to go to;

Lombok

Jogya

I love big cities, but hate Jakarta.

For me: Bali (much around the south and up to Bedugul), Java (Surabaya, Malang, Trawas, Tretes, Solo, Semarang, Jogja, Bandung & Jakarta)

My favourite large city in Indonesia (from what I've seen) is Bandung. Least favourite large city is Jakarta - probably the worst place I've ever been. Favourite place in Indonesia is Bedugul..

The places I have been makes too long a list but I am surprised no one has mentioned Borobudur? You should also go to Irian Jaya now West Papua as the culture is unique especially in the Highlands.

My second homeland in Toraja.

Ternate and Tidore just to eat the land crabs which are the strangest species I have ever seen. The Minihasa people and culture in Sumatra

Then all 13,000 islands in the rest of the archipelego which make up the Tanah Air in the national anthem of this wonderful and diverse country we love.

Finally I believe you could spend years just seeing and getting to know Bali which is why we are all here on this website after all

When one mentions Jogyakarta - one should assume Borobudur and Prambanan Temples as I went there too. So, Jimbo...yes, several of us here have been there.
And you should write down all the places you've been as it would make for an interesting read even if it takes one whole page!

Hubby and I have to go and see Lake Toba, Sumatera.

SG, yes, I do love Jakarta too very very much!! I know it's horrendous with its traffics and distances to some people and to me too as it's so overwhelming to go from one place to another. But perhaps I just feel right at home as soon as I'm there as I know quite a few elites and of course it goes without saying, my large numbers of family and relatives that I'm oblivious to it. As my husband says: "I'm indifferent to it" as he too loves Jakarta.

Apart from the traffic, noise and dirt.... the real reason I dislike Jakarta so much is that on the three occasions I went there when I was younger - I was constantly getting groped. Even the first time, when I was travelling with my mother

I wasnt able to deal with it very well back then... its a shame that now I am older & wiser they dont try anymore ...I'd soon show them whatfor

Bert, in Bali or Jakarta. Yikes!! I wouldn't like to be in your place...

Mimpimanis, I'm sorry to hear that. Sounds like Italy. Yet, how funny what reality is. Italy is famous for that, yet, none of this is the norm here in Milan while you don't hear about that in Jakarta yet it doesn happen.

That's why I never believed in the common saying of each nation as the reality is just so different.
