Indonesia 2008, Unity in Diversity

Postby Bert Vierstra on Wed Jan 16, 2008 6:10 am

Does anyone notice anything of the Visit Indonesia 2008 campaign?

I did see a lot of "Visit Malaysia 2007" ads....

Here some of the ads:

I watched 2 of them. Saw a lot of volcanoes and monkeys swimming away from crocodiles. Not many cars or humans.

Why... what's up Bert?

I thought you might tell me they were fake. Being a bit of a camera buff I thought it was some of the most spectacular scenery i have ever seen in Indonesia.

A little different from the activity we seem to be used to in Bali each time we return I guess.

I am now pretty keen to get over to Krakatoa after seeing the footage. BTW who produces then Bert?

Here is another calendar
http://www.budpar.go.id/filedata/3147_1139-9.CalenderEventVIY2008.pdf
which is quite different - so its all a bit confusing.

I am not very impressed by the web information available about Visit Indonesia 2008 - the promotion for Visit Malaysia 2007 seemed much more effective. Maybe this shows why tourism growth in Malaysia is much bigger.

I think "celebrating 100 years of nation's awakening" would only get a mark of 4 out of 10 with the comment "capable of doing better".

Great point, Bert!

Various Malaysia adverts have been around for years now and they hit the fascination button in that, they're tantalising, artistic and beautiful.
It's sad to see that Indonesia haven't been aggressive in this and yet it's a much more rich vast country in culture, diversity, tradition and art and what's frustrating is that they are the authentic ones. Yes, Malaysia has its own - the three different ethnic diversities (Chinese, Malays/Bumiputeras, Indians) plus its Sarawak and the Borneo parts (long houses, etc.). And when it comes to food. Indonesia's got it!! Also people (sorry, I'm biased but it is the truth).
If anyone reading this would like to create a promotional Indonesia tourism adfor International market, I may have someone to do it and we can beat Malaysia in a heartbeat...

Milan is spot on point. The “Malaysia truly Asia” ads have been driving Indonesians “nuts” since those ads first came on the scene about two years ago. What really upsets many Indonesians is with Malaysia “taking credit” for various cultural identities that are uniquely Indonesian, and not Malay.
