People will remember Dr. A.A. Made Djelantik, who passed away on September 5, 2007, in many ways. He was a true Renaissance Man: a great medical doctor of international repute, the founder of Sanglah Hospital (renamed now for him), musician, outstanding art lover and historian -- besides teaching Medicine at Udayana University, he also taught courses on Aesthetics.
Following a cerebral stroke in 1999 that left him in a one-month long coma, Dr. Djelantik found himself unable to write (writing was one of his many loves). He started painting watercolors whose subjects were memories of his past adventurous life. Recently, these watercolors have been gathered by Italian storyteller Idanna Pucci and illustrate her latest story book: Against All Odds: The Strange Destiny of a Balinese Prince, (Saritaksu, Bali, 2005).
Dr. Djelantik's watercolors will now be exhibited at ARMA (Agung Rai Museum of Art) along with some of the artist's memorabilia, in a permanent exhibition that opens this coming Wednesday, January 9, 2008.
Thanks to this exhibit, the whole world can appreciate his talent as an artist. This is surely a worthy tribute to a most worthy man. So, don't miss it (I surely wont): next time you are in Ubud, if there was another reason to visit the ARMA, this is it.
