Re: Change of Scenery.

Hi all,

Well all I know is before I die, who knows when that could be, I need a place in sicily..

Mimpi, actually I've considered some of the beachfront lots available in Lombok, they are very cheap you're right and there is 'potential' with the new airport, but I have land in Bali, and to be honest, Bali & Lombok, just too close geographically to feel like it was a different place.. What am I going to leave bali for a week long holiday to lombok? :P for some, they see a huge difference - to me Indonesia, while different from place to place, isn't really that different..

Another English agent which as I understand is what Balilife is trying to avoid. Not that with an Italian agent, the price would be cheaper.
A pity, really, because my husband's family did own a house/property in Sicily until just a few years ago. It's a part of a much bigger estate and his family inherited around 5 hectares of land out of it that has the vineyard, olive trees (in fact his sister used to do the vendemia every year to bring some bottles back to Milan) - black berry trees. I learned how not to stain whilst picking the fruits off, etc.
The house itself is not a big one. Its size more or less around 250 square meters.
Anyway, tant pis!!

Imagine not being in Bali and wanting to buy a property there .

Okay, you need a real estate agent, who do you trust ?

Then you need to negotiate price for the property, do you know the going prices in Sicily?
You will need a surveyor to ensure the property is structurally sound.
Do you know one in Sicily ?

Then you need a lawyer/settlement agent, do you know one in Sicily ?

Transfer of money, do you have a bank in Sicily ?

you see my point ?

This is the same problem most foreigners have when purchasing property overseas.

Or you can fly to Sicily, live there for a few months, research it for yourself, by that stage you may as well pay someone to do the foot work for you and find you suitable properties to view.

Did you read the FAQ on that site ?

I closed the deal on my house in Jakarta without ever being there, however, the owner is a European of another country, that I deal with him by phone only and sent my sister-in-law in Jakarta to take a look but not inspect as it was occupied by a foreign tenant. Only when the time came for me to sign did I make that trip to Jakarta.
Again, this is just the experience I had.

yes, you have a sister in Jakarta who can go see for you. You also speak the language.

Does Bali life have anyone in Sicily ? All the paper work will be written in Italian.

Chilli, you're right.. Nobody I know there, don't speak the language, limited understanding of the laws.. Like I said, I know I need somebody's help, was just hoping it didn't need to be a complete unrelated party.. But I think that's the reality :-( thanks for the link, I'll look for it..

Milan, if your hubby has any other olive groves he wants to offload, let me know :-) but like I said, I'm looking for inexpensive land down there and from what I've seen you can really get a bargain there..

I'll try, Balilife, but I can't promise as the family stopped going to Sicily for their summer holidays since the house has been sold, except for a few remaining cousins and relatives there. But I'll keep it open.

I was just now discussing with hubby re: their family house in Sicily on how wrong of them to have sold it. Then he nonchalantly responded that part of the blame goes to me. I was taken aback a little and promptly made me ask him why. "Well, because after 2-3 times you've been there, you refused to return there again, so what's the use of us keeping it?", he replied.
Now, I feel a certain guilt and remorse. Feel like tearing my hair out... :x :(

Just thought to share this here. :(

Shame on you Milan!!

Just joking of course - hindsight is 20/20 as they say.. At least you know the area, the people, etc - getting into another place for you is easily done if that really ends up being what you want..

I'm sending you this website anyway even though it's in Italian, if you need any assistance, just ask. That way you can see for yourself the kind of property you have in mind by looking at the location and the type, size and price of the property.
