BIASED TRAVEL WARNINGS

Postby tintin on Wed Aug 01, 2007 4:07 am

I've always contended, and many members of this forum would agree, that while there have been several well-publicized attacks in Indonesia, overall the risks are small. First and foremost, these attacks have no relation with the overall view of the Indonesian people towards foreign visitors. This is particularly obvious on Hindu Bali.

It is obvious to me that in the many US State Department's Travel Advisories there is a large dose of politics in their warnings. One of the most flagrant examples is that of Great Britain, where, in spite of several recent terrorist attacks, several attempted airline attacks on aircraft originating from there, and the number of known British-born terrorists that have conducted or attempted to conduct attacks, Great Britain does not even shows up as a country on the general State Department list of dangerous countries, let alone as the subject of a Travel Advisory. Of course, the US State Department never issues travel warning about its own country, in spite of the reality on the ground there.

I came across this very interesting world map, showing recent and current terrorist incidents, which illustrate my point:

Have a look. What strikes you the most on this map?
Keep on smiling.

tintin,
Strange map....the U.K. doesn't show "a sratch" but the U.S. looks like a war zone.

Yeah, just saw this yesterday, err, "somewhere else". Good graphical representation of that travel-bureau /diplomatic hypocrisy.

Hi tintin does make your blood boil the way travel warnings are issued as far as Bali goes i guess i myself must be careful of my own pro Bali stance all that aside it does appear political motivation must play a role and of course that extends to trade with countries with shocking human rights, that being the case for those affected better to eat than the alternative a catch 22 for any individual. Then the other problem we all have selective reporting to what end who knows is graffiti, home invasion, robbery, ect terrorism on a local basis? i think it probably is, for myself treating people how i would like to be treated seems the only way to go. :!:

My understanding was this was rather overstated by the media and most of these folks have been released.

Having just got back from NZ, it amazed me the number of supposedly sane intelligent people who were convinced that RI was fill of maniacs who wanted to slit their throats because they were vaguely Christian or western

When you get to the USA its even worse, and we won't even talk about Australia.....I got called a flaming idiot several times in Queensland last year and one woman accused me of parental irresponsibilty
