The running or in many cases walking is just the excuse to meet.

And drink, sing bawdy songs, help frightened Balinese villagers through which the latest Hash Run went.

Completely understandable to me. Some run, some walk, some crawl, some stay at the before or after meeting point and drink (or smoke), in anticipation.
