Hi all,
As a student of theatre I am required to attend performances in formal settings, such as cremations, odalans and weddings. I will probably just ask my landlady to help with this, but I was wondering if anyone could give me any tips on finding pakaian adat in Denpasar.
And would you rather buy or make a kebaya?
Thanks!
Have you tried Jalan Sulawesi in Denpasar? Loads of fabric shops and tailors.
Another good one is Alta Moda in Kuta. 4 floors of fabrics, hundreds of them. Also tailor available.
Hey thanks so much for your reply, I will make sure I try these places next time I want a kebaya :)
I ended up going to my landlady's tailor in Sanur but there was definitely not much to choose from.
Thanks again!
I can't imagine that it would be too difficult to find what you're looking for. If your landlady's tailor doesn't have much, just ask some other Balinese.
You could also try Vaughan Hatch, a New Zealand expat in Sanur who writes a regular column called A Blurb from the Kulture Kid in The Bali Advertiser. He's been here since 1997, speaks fluent Indonesian and Balinese and has a passion for playing gamelan.
His address is:

As you say you're a "student of theatre", he might be a good source of information for you.
I don't wear kebaya for an obvious reason, but I can assure you that ANY tailor in Bali would be able to help you. For sure, you don't need a Balinese Pierre Cardin.![]()
Keep on smiling.

Thanks to all who replied, this is great :) My landlady's tailor did a great job. I guess I was a little anxious about this because I had not realized you can get the fabric from the tailor.
I think it is also a good idea to get a Balinese friend to accompany if you don't want to pay 3 times the normal price (unless you are filthy rich and feel you should pay more than Balinese which, in a way, is fair, I guess).
Maybe you should upload your picture here with your new outfit, lol![]()
You should make your kebaya so it fits right. Thought this topic was kind of funny though. 3 million Balinese living in Bali and this question gets asked on an expat forum.
