As I will be staying in Bali for 12 months, does anyone have any advice and cost guideline on car rentals and names of suitable companies, as I'm trying not to get stitched up as a newcomer to the island. Wondering if a long-term rental makes more sense financially than renting on a needs basis?
You will find that once you have a vehicle it becomes a pain in the a#*e to be without one. The size and cost will be governed by where you end up living.
It is no point having large vehicle if you are living down a narrow lane. It is also no point in having a small uncomfortable vehicle if you are planning on doing a lot of travelling. Once you know where you will be living the rest will become easy.
Hi Blue Boy,
I agree with noidea, you need to determin where you are living and what your requirements are to know what sort of rental car you want and how much that will cost you.
To give you some sort of idea.
A Toyota Avanza is a very common car here;Toyota Avanza - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I pay for my Avanza rental 3 months in advance & pay 2.7 mil per mnth. I'd likely get a better price if I rented over 12 months which I don't want to do for various reasons.
Do you know what area you will be living in? It might help to get some car rental referrals.
Hope this is of some help.
Cheers.
Hi Zoyra.
I'm pleased to hear it is a good rate...I've got no idea what going rates are. Agung (who I rent from) tells me it's a good rate but then again everyone is always claiming something is a good rate/price - nice to have this confirmed.
I didn't start out on this rate but can't remember what the initial rate he asked for was - it was prob a months rent and wouldn't have been proportionately too much higher (our rental terms keep changing).
Last rental period he said the rate was going to be 2.8 for 3 months in advance but when I went to pay he said, I'll do it for 2.7 - kind of reverse negotiation which is strange....then again, nothing strikes me as strange in Asia and I don't negotiate or haggle with him.
There is a chance I'm getting a better rate than other bule in the village but I doubt he'll offer this rate to people outside of the village - opportunity for other business dealings with people who live in the village.
I'm happy to provide contact details but if I'm getting a good rate it is likely because we have built respect and I'd like to continue to deal with him accordingly. Before I PM you his details, do you mind me asking where you live and how long do you want to rent for? I'm in Prerenan (next beach up from Echo). If you're not too far away I'll let him know you might be in contact if the rate is the same (or close). If you're outside of Canggu...I'd better ask him if he'd consider renting to you and how much the rate would be.
I'll prob talk to him tomorrow as my rental period must be getting close to ending and I've got to do a visa run. Let me know what you're after and I'll have a quick chat before forwarding you his details. Hope you understand...anyway, it might help get you a better rate if you are referred first.
BTW: I'm curious..do you know what the average going rate would be?
Cheers
your price is very good LAtah, is it a new Avanza?
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
Almost new, Gilbert. He dropped by this morning.. Agung was over the moon, he'd just bought a Harley. You might meet him soon if he joins the club.
I spoke with him about the next rental term and it got a little cheaper again. Think he is adjusting to longer term rate as I go...which is very nice of him as I haven't paid up front for the longer term rate. I asked him about a yearly rate for Zoyra and it works out at less than 2.5 per month but it has to be paid in advance. I've sent her his details.
I showed him the Phantom on tokobagus and he said his friend has one he never rides. Agung called him to ask if he'd sell it and he was happy to. It's a 2008 with all papers and very low km's - asking 30jt but he reckons he can negotiate that. Sounds good right? I suddenly have a few unexpected expenses next month so was thinking of asking if I could rent it for a month or two and then buy. Any ideas on what I might offer for monthly rental?
Cheers.
Hi Latah...
Yeah, if he just got his Harley he will probably will be joining the Dewata Harley anniversary Ride on october the first.
Celebration is up here in the north, visiting several resthomes and orphanages first and then indulge in food and drinks near Lovina :D
If I were you, grab that bike with both hands...a 2008 with all papers and low KM for 30jt is a good price, even better if he can get it cheaper ofcourse ;)
As for renting it before buying, why not pay a DP of 50% and tell him you pay the other 50% after two months..
Bikers (harleyowners) amongst each other don't do that much with contracts, so don't be surprised if just a kwitansi with date of DP and date of future 50% is all that's needed
to buy the bike/make it a deal.
about the renting price of the avanza...that's way cheaper then his own monthly payments to the financecompany, so you're doing great in negotiating ;)
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
Thanks No.Idea and Latah for your assistance. I am not sure exactly which area I will be staying in, but it seems the rental prices have quite a lot of flexibility depending on issues like location, duration, newcomer to Bali etc. I'll get settled first then make local enquiries I think that makes most sense.
