Default “Anti Porn” Law. Will it Pass the MPR, and What Will it Mea

A day after a massive demonstration in Jakarta in support of this bill, one has to ponder, will it pass?

The Governor of Bali has already been quoted calling this proposed legislation, “Shariaism” directly referring to the ultra conservative Sharia laws of Islam. He has also made it clear that regardless of the passing of this law, in Bali, it will not be enforced. How that will work remains to be seen if this bill passes and becomes law.

In its present draft form, this proposed bill is very encompassing, and it would make a simple thing like a kiss on the lips of your loved one in public against the law. It would also ban bikini beach attire, and for certain, partial nude sunbathing. Even a good, straight on massage (no happy ending) would be outlawed under this bill. One can only speculate on the potentially disastrous consequences to Bali tourism.

In my view, it is not the law itself that causes concern. It’s the trend that worries me the most. The simple fact of having such a law introduced to the Indonesian MPR is cause enough for concern in my view.

This absolutely ridiculous bill is supposedly becoming "law" next month some time.

Will it mean all the sexy white-skinned Javanese goddesses with dandruff in their hair won't grace my TV screen anymore? (What about my satellite TV programmes?)

    And Roy reiterates:
...and it would make a simple thing like a kiss on the lips of your loved one in public against the law...
From my reading and understanding, it wouldn't be that bad. That part of it is directed at those misfits/infidels who would dare to kiss for 5 minutes in public. We all see that kind of behaviour all the time, don't we? Nevertheless, I'm considering investing in companies that manufacture stop-watches in Indonesia. The next thing: A categorical definition of a kiss. The whackos behind this certainly don't mean "keep it simple, stupid".

I feel sorry for SBY, a little bit. Who's pulling his strings and what's he afraid of? No way am I anything like the president and wouldn't want his job for millions (of dollars). Juggling was never one of my developed skills. Roll on, Indonesia. Make the past the future. Now that's progress.

    :P

In my view, yes it will be THAT bad. The absolute worst part about this legislation is that it goes 100% against the very grain and fiber of what makes Indonesia, Indonesia.

The passing of this law will undermine all of the work of Indonesia’s founding fathers, and throw out, as with the bath water...the baby...the whole idea of unity in diversity.

I’m betting that this law, in its current form, will not pass. I’m also betting on the wisdom and intelligence of Indonesia’s MPR and other governmental “powers that be” to see the potential damage such a bill, if passed, could have on this country.

I really hope you're right on this one. What amazes me is that it's been on some agenda for so long. The 'price' of an emerging 'democracy', perhaps. Even Gus Dur's pissed off with the rat-bags and he's half blind.

The whole shemozzle is so ludicrous it hurts my brain to even try and figure the angles. I give up. And if it's passed, I will spend some time observing the ramifications and maybe start packing my stuff up to leave.

"Reality glasses" should be mandatory for everybody in Indonesian government. And time is running out.

What I'd like to see is an Anti-Stupidity Bill in this country.

    ....Don't cry for me, indonesia...
