Default US$17.6 allocated to fight rabies in Indonesia

The government has allocated a total of Rp 158.6 billion (approximately US$17.6 million) to curb the spread of rabies over the next two years.

Agriculture Ministry director general for livestock and health Prabowo R. Caturuso said the largest portion of the funds would go to Bali, North Sumatra’s Nias Island, and Maluku’s West Maluku Tenggara, given their “emergency” rabies status.

“These areas recorded the highest numbers people being bitten by dogs,” Prabowo said Friday, as reported by kontan.co.id.

Of the funding, Bali will receive Rp 44.6 billion in 2011 and Rp 38.5 billion in 2012; Nias Rp 27.5 billion in 2011 and Rp 24.5 billion in 2012, and West Maluku Tenggara Rp 13.5 billion in 2011 and Rp 11 billion in 2012.

The funds are expected to be used to purchase rabies vaccines, and to monitor and evaluate the implementation of prevention programs.

Bali recorded the highest number cases, with more than 57,800 people bitten by dogs and 119 dead from rabies in 2010. Nias reported more than 1,100 people bitten by dogs and 26 deaths. West Maluku Tenggara reported 359 dog bites and 20 deaths.

Nationwide, the figures stood at more than 74,800 people being bitten, and 195 deaths from the disease.

So one in every 60 people has been bitten (and gotten it recorded). Amazing!

The figure of 57,800 has to be wrong! That would mean that nearly everyone should know at least one person bitten by a (rabies infected?) dog. I don't know anyone who's been bitten, do you?

^^ My thoughts exactly, even the stats they put out on the working girls with aids is a little hard to believe.

I'm not convinced on the amount of money that has gone into this is real either but they were doing there rounds in Singaraja today. If you're in the area and you see a dog with a red colar you'll know hes had the jab

    Some more maths:

guestimated number of dogs on Bali 2.5 million

divide $17.6 by that number and you get +/- 7.

Now if you were to offer $7 (Rp100,000) for every dead dog I'm betting that the rabies/dog problem would be over in about 2 weeks?

    What do you think?

I think they will be importing dead dogs.

got a visit this morning from some veterinarians accompanied by the dogcatchers...
there's a big change in handling the rabies-problem...
Instead of killing all dogs without a collar (no owner) they switched to a 'catch-vaccinate-release' policy .
There were alot of complaints (both from expat and balinese people) on the previous method of handling the rabies-problem, this made them revise the method of handling the so called problem.

Vaccinations are being provided/paid for by the government, they still use the red collars as part of identifying already vaccinated dogs.
So all-in-all good news...in my not so humble opinion ofcourse

Gilbert, I'm just curious. Were the people who came to you this morning connected with BAWA or were they hired by the Indonesian government?
