Default South West Australia better value for holidays than Bali says tourism chief

MARGARET River tourism authorities have labelled the region's main holiday rival Bali as dirty, overpriced and a terrorist threat.

Augusta-Margaret River Tourism Bureau chief executive Simon Ambrose said cheap airfares and fierce competition among carriers had made Bali a top getaway for West Australians.

But he said a trip to Margaret River was better value, less hassle and much safer.

His comments came after the Health Department announced that a fourth West Australian had contracted legionnaire's disease while holidaying in Bali since last month.

"You're not going to get legionnaire's disease, dengue fever or have any of those issues if you come to the South-West," Mr Ambrose said.

"I don't want to be alarmist but, for me, I'd prefer to have a safe, secure holiday rather than one with risks."

While accommodation could be more expensive, Mr Ambrose said the cost was "offset by the lack of airfares and passports required to get down south".

And he said visitors to Margaret River could find comfort in knowing their carbon footprint was lower than flying to Bali.

A press release issued by the tourism bureau went on to state: "Another major difference in the two destinations is cleanliness."

And it pointed to the threat of terrorism, saying: "Major issues such as terrorism and health are not as relevant, if at all, when holidaying at home."

But a spokesman at WA's Indonesian Consulate, Syahri Sakidin, said the claims were wrong and it was unfair to compare the two destinations.

"To say Bali is dirty, I don't think so," he said.

"Terrorism is a big issue that is a concern for everyone in the world. Everywhere we go we have to think about that, not just Bali."

Sounds like Western Ozz is feeling the pinch?

Gotta pull out those big guns to win back the tourists.

How about Box Web spiders? Snakes? Crocs? Floods? Australians?

I dunno about western australia but I just got back from Gold Coast and I can see why everyone wants to come to Bali, there really isn't much to see or do and prices are almost criminal. It cost me and the wife $7.40 to travel 1.5km by bus back from surfers to my parents house.

Okay, we went down to Dunsborough (45 north of Margaret River) for a "long" weekend 3 nights, 4 days and got a rental house rather than hotel. There was 6 of us the cheapest place we could find was $190 each for the 3 nights, no aircon or heating. We then had the fuel travelling there and back which is 3 tanks = $180.00 we took 2 cars though so thats 360.00 . Food would be up around $1500.00. Alcohol $800.00 (we are not huge drinkers).

    So we have:
    $1200.00 for accomodation
    $ 360.00 for fuel
    $1500.00 for food
    $800.00 alcohol

= $650.00 per person for 3 nights. Thats without doing anything touristy, seeing another culture or leaving this country.

    Bali:
    $1800.00 Airfares
    $180.00 accomo
    $300.00 on food
    $500.00 on alcohol

$465.00 per person for 3 nights. put in an extra $200.00 and youd be able to do 3 - 6 tourist things aswell.

I know where I would go.

A terrorist attack is a threat in Bali, a shark attack and bored teenagers cuasing problems is the threat in Margarets.

I wonder if Mr Sakidin has ever set foot in Bali? I mean - "Bali is clean?" Since when? The guy is obviously a f*ckwit of the first magnitude.

    And to soontobeexpat:
You didn't include health/travel insurance, transport costs for six people (would you rent a minibus or three motorbikes?)...six "moderate" drinkers - three days - $500? That's about one bottle of legally-bought Red label or two cases of large Bintang here. (Not counting your "duty free", of course.)
    Way to party...

Seriously over priced, over rated and very limited perceptional value by overpaid tourism authorities on behalf of margaret river. If thats the best they can come out with bali can only gain a few more tourists.

Recent visit to mornington peninsula melbourne? outside cafe in redhill
    Coffee 6 dollars
    Apple Pie 5 dollars
    Pub in Mornington
A glass of beer (refuse to sell carlton draught) only those trendite beers blondie etc
    6 dollars

Taxis? pre pay after 11pm and if you travel a short distance (10 km) expect to wait up to 2 hours on friday and saturday nights.
    Absolute joke

    Default Not to mention...

...that the Balinese are genuinely pleased to see you, unlike the people of MR who just want your money. Also, the accommodation, the service and the value in Bali is a million miles ahead of MR.

Why is it that they feel they have to denigrate Bali in order to boost their own popularity? Why don't they just try to emulate some of the things that attract us all there instead?
    Cheers

    Thumbs down funny

shoving someone down and getting on their back to have a better view. what a dumb ass to try and talk dirty about another destination to boost their own tourism.

Terry is absolutely right, if they want to get a share of the market they should start working on revising what they've been doing up till now. Instead of wasting energy and good will trying to pull down another globally accepted holiday destination they should come up with solutions!

And I thought dumb jokers like them only roam around in the developing and third world countries!

    Cheers,

    Ali
