Saw this and got all dewey eyed... Eco-warrior James Pribram returns from Uluwatu Mission - ESPN
Now if we could just make Uluwatu everywhere!
Here's a small part of the issue ..
How was your message received?
" Apparently some locals were upset, but I don't know exactly why because I never had the opportunity to address those concerns and never found out who they were. It was disappointing because I thought we shared a common goal in cleaning up the area."
He states "some locals were upset" ... if he would have taken to the time to find out why ... he would have found the "you don't tell me how to live my life" attitude ... that goes for Balinese to Balinese as well ... not just for westerners with Balinese ...
What did you find most disturbing?
"It's sad when egos get in the way of preserving our oceans and beaches." (and the rest of the island)
Just the way it is .. there may be a very very small % of the local population trying to do something .. but, wait and see how long that really lasts ...
I've stated this before and will again .. until the banjar's accept there is a problem & public education system & the so called guru's help to educate and change the attitude of the young .. pollution will only get worse .. that realization and transition will take generations .. imo

Just a suggestion:
I have been invited by a local training school (Primagama) to come once or twice a week and just talk English to the kids there. Now basically the subject is my own choice as their main drift is to learn English as it is spoken so I have tried to work a little ecology into my weekly rant/chat and since I do it very slowly and the kids hang on every work I reckon that some of the "message" also get through, don't you?
I'm sure that any local school would welcome the rest of you expats with open arms and minds if you could find the time too?
been there done that...but after 3 months of hearing 'goodmorning' while it's 3 in the afternoon, and ofcourse each time explaining the difference between morning and afternoon and
evening...
I'm sorry but I gave up.![]()
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
Not really, nope I don't think your "message" will get through ...
Just curious .. how's your local language skills ? The so called english courses taught in public schools here .. well .. may be lacking just a little bit ,
Yes of course they listen, hanging on every word ... they don't hear "native english" speakers often ... more importantly - Do they really understand what you are saying ?
Short term attention span and memory loss is prevalent in the community ... try testing them & let us know how that goes ...
If you can speak fluently, minimum BI or better yet BB, where you can translate as you go , not the "guru" ... you might just maybe be able get your "message" across to a few kids, short term & locally ....
To be sure I am not a pessimist .. I'm a realist .... sometimes a realist may sound like a pessimist .. experience ....
