Isn't the Australian PM is from the left wing party?

Right when Germany, France, Italy elected right wing as their leaders - no pun intended.

Yes he is from the ALP - the Australian Labor Party, which is the more liberal / left of the 3 major parties. The conservative parties in Australia have long been unable to win / hold government without forming a coalition. So the two main conservative parties (Liberal and National parties) have run as a coalition for a long time (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coalition_%28Australia%29).

A person further to the left may suggest the true leftist party in Australian politics is the 'Australian Democrats'- but they're not considered a power party.

- ALP has a strong Union history but has more recently tried to decouple itself from the Unions
- The Liberal Party has generally been a Party for the upper crust of Australian society - but this is obviously a sweeping generalization
- The National Party has and maintains it's key support base in rural Australia
