Bali Police shot dead a suspected armed robber and arrested his four alleged accomplices on Saturday, making good on their threat to shoot criminals on sight to combat a crime wave on the resort island.
The fatality, identified as M. Syahri, 34, was believed to have been part of an armed robbery gang, police said on Sunday.
Sr. Comr. Gde Sugianyar Dwi Putra, the provincial police spokesman, said Syahri and the four others were cornered at a residence where they were believed to have sold their stolen items.
“During the arrest, Syahri attempted to flee, prompting officers to open fire,” Sugianyar said, adding that the suspect died from a gunshot to the head.
From the scene, police seized Rp 17 million ($1,887) in cash, a laptop computer, five gold chains and bracelets, 16 cellphones, three wristwatches and two machetes believed to have been used to carry out robberies.
Sugianyar said the four detained suspects had confessed to having committed at least 13 armed robberies and gave a list of the locations of each incident.
All the members of the gang had criminal records, he added, including Syahri, who was shot in the leg in 2008 while attempting to escape arrest for another armed robbery.
Sugianyar said police were now tracking down the other members of the gang, which is believed to be responsible for a series of break-ins at the homes of locals and foreigners in Badung and Denpasar.
The shooting comes just one week after Bali Police Chief Insp. Gen. Hadiatmoko issued a shoot-on-sight order for criminals targeting foreigners, saying the frequency of crimes against foreign tourists and residents in Denpasar and Badung had now reached worrying levels.

unless they were aiming for his leg![]()
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
Incidents like this may deter other would-be robbers, but I'm not so excited about Bali police becoming trigger happy. The beginning of a slippery slope towards American-style law enforcement, in my oh so humble opinion.![]()
yeah, that was actually my point...If I come around to it, I will upload some pics of targets the police use when they get firearms training...
They tend to hit everything just not the inner four rings (wich is basically the size of a mans head)..
holding your breath like, inhale-exhale hold at 50% and squeezing the trigger is something they not seem to understand
so mat might be hitting the nail on the head, hahaha..

ow...I don't see much wrong with the american style of apprehending a suspect.
even after being pulled over myself... after accelarating with screeching tires from a red light turning green but actally not breaking the speedlimit, I heard the weewooowweeeww sound and a voice over a speaker telling me to pull over..ofcourse I complied to this demand..after stopping I was told to put my hands in the air (car was a convertible) and hold them there, if I would move he would shoot..he approached the car passengerside and I saw (mirror) he had his gun drawn finger on the trigger and not along side the barrel..... Me being a good citizen, knowing those L.A. cops don't mess around I wasn't even thinking of 'running'.
maybe by actually doing what they say they would do, Balinese police has scored a few points in my book...but overallscore is still below average..

The latest I read is that the dead man was responsible for all the reported robberies against tourists recently, including the man stabbed in the leg and the death of the British man wife.
That's tidied all that nastiness up nicely.
With the announcement of the 'shoot to kill policy' just a couple of days ago this all seems very contrived to me.
