Obama missing 'rambutan, bakso and nasi goreng'
Jakarta Post | Wed, 11/26/2008
President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono held a telephone conversation with U.S. president-elect Barack Obama during his stopover in Seattle, and invited him to visit Indonesia, tempointeraktif.com reported on Wednesday.
When the presidential flight touched down at Nagoya airport in Japan on Tuesday, Yudhoyono made a statement to reporters over the airplane's intercom.
"He addressed me with, 'Apa Kabar Bapak President?' (How are you Mr. President?), with his fluent Indonesian language," Yudhoyono said.
Obama was missing several local delicacies such as nasi goreng (fried rice), rambutan and bakso (meatball soup), he added.
Yudhoyono had congratulated Obama's election as U.S. president and suggested he visit Indonesia after attending the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation meeting in Singapore next year.
Yudhoyono said they had both agreed to maintain good relations between the two countries.
"I felt his warmth and friendship in the conversation."
During one of his campaign speeches, Obama said he would visit Indonesia within the first 100 days of his presidency. Obama is due to take office on Jan 20, 2009.
Anybody would be like Obama when away from Indonesia?
I personally couldn't wait to get to all my favourite Indonesian savouries (pastel, lemper, jalang kote' which is from Makassar, risoles, and all the cabe and sambel).
Then the juicy and delicious tropical fruits such as manggos, mangosteens, durians, dukus, rambutans, pepayas, jambu merah, srikayas - but all depends on the season. I know it's the season of manggas already and hope it'll last until my arrival.
Oh my god :( he misses Bakso? :( now I'm starting to question his judgement..
Wheen we were kids we userd to get packing foam and put it in petrol. It would "melt" into a hard, rubberish compund that you could form into balls and throw around. When I first saw bakso, I thought that's what it was, but when I tasted bakso I realized the packing foam tasted much better, and the packing foam wasn't full of the gristly white crap that makes most bule gagg..
Nasi goreng, yes, rambutan, yes, bakso, NO.. But hey, he was probably just being nice

You should take into account that he went to school in Jkt as a young kid so during breaks, the kids would rush outside to be in line for the mie bakso, singkong goreng with sambel,
rujak etc. No peanut butter and jelly sandwich there...
Looks like he's gonna do it! His first International speech would probably be from Jakarta (just saw on Late Edition).During one of his campaign speeches, Obama said he would visit Indonesia within the first 100 days of his presidency.
