Infrastructure developer GVK Power and Infrastructure Ltd (GVKPIL), on Tuesday signed two agreements with the Government of Indonesia to develop greenfield international airports in North Bali and Yogyakarta, Java.
The agreements were signed in the presence of H Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, president of the Republic of Indonesia who is currently on a visit to India.
This Hyderabad-based infrastructure firm runs the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai, through Mumbai International Airport Pvt Ltd (Mial) and has become the second largest shareholder in Bangalore International Airport Ltd (Bial).
GVK’s rival company GMR Group had already spreading to various international geographies including Turkey and Male. GMR had built a new passenger terminal with a capacity to handle 20 million passenger capacity, at the Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport in Turkey and won the concession for modernising and expanding the Male Airport along with Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad (MAHB).
GMR has developed and commissioned the greenfield international airport at Hyderabad. The group operates the Delhi International Airport.
A media statement by GVK said that the agreement for the Bali airport is a three-way agreement between Badan Koordinasi Penanaman Modal (BKPM - a board set up by the Government of Indonesia for the facilitation of domestic and foreign investment), PT Pembangunan Bali Mandiri (a special purpose vehicle for airport development) and GVKPIL.
The agreement for the Java airport is an agreement between Angkasa Pura I (the Government of Indonesia owned airport operations and management company), BKPM and GVKPIL, it said.
The scope of the agreements provides exclusivity to GVKPIL and includes planning, design and development, operations and management of the airports along with all associated infrastructure, land and commercial development.

Great news for North Bali residents ! Does anyone know ... the location of North Bali airport...and will it handle both International and domestic flights ?
As long as you aren't under the flight paths! I have heard Gerokgak mentioned a few times as the location.
Give a man a fish and he will eat for a day. Teach a man to fish and he will sit in a boat drinking beer all day.
I don't think a location has been decided. It would probably be part of their brief to do the feasibility studies for proposed sites.
It has always been talked of as an international airport. But that doesn't mean much. Makassar (South Sulawesi) is an international airport - but hasn't attracted many international flights. Lombok is also said to be international - so I think there may be too many international airports too close to each other. I think Denpasar will still attract most the flights.
An airport in North Bali, Int'l or Domestic, makes as much sense as a bicycle to a fish. Logistic? Has anyone heard about the word "logistic?"![]()
Keep on smiling.

to build in 3 to 4 years, and when/if it's finally build...
like ronB said, I doubt it will attract any of the mayor airlinecompanies.
But it sure is good if one would own land in the mentioned area :)
don't read between the lines..i think the words are clear enough...:)
Is it me, again? I read the article with a faint feeling of advancing insanity (happens a lot!).
The company that signed the agreement to build the airport (GVK) until now only manages Mumbai airport and has shares in Bangelore - correct?
The company that was originally considered for building the airport (GMR Group), and has extensive airport building experience, isn't even part of the deal but is mentioned in half the article!
Sort of Competence through Association?
And this quote just made what few hairs I still have stand right up!

All I can say is don't bank on landing any time soon at Bali North Airport![]()
